Dee Ford is the best edge defender through Week 8

pay that man his money

https://www.profootballfocus.com/new...er-of-the-year

Quote:
Ford isn’t just better than the rest of his AFC West rivals; he’s the best edge defender in the NFL through Week 8. The former Auburn product’s 90.5 overall grade and 91.9 pass-rush grade lead all players with 200-plus defensive snaps along the edge this season.

Propping up his 91.9 pass-rush grade is Ford’s high-end efficiency going after the quarterback. He and Philadelphia Eagles’ Chris Long are the only two edge defenders with 200-plus pass-rush snaps with a win percentage above 20%. Ford’s pass-rush productivity (11.1) also ranks second behind just Buffalo Bills edge defender Jerry Hughes, and he’s out-snapped Hughes by 70 pass-rush snaps so far this season. Ford leads all edge defenders with 45 total pressures, including 26 hurries, 10 quarterback hits and nine sacks.

In addition to pressures and pressure efficiency, time to pressure also affects PFF’s pass-rush grade, for pressures recorded earlier in the play have a heightened effect on the passer and more often lead to bigger defensive plays (i.e., strip-sacks, turnover-worthy throws). And no edge defender is better at forcing quick decisions than Ford.

Quote:
Ford leads all edge defenders in total pressures (19) on passes of 2.5 seconds or less, a testament to his ability to beat his opponent early in the down. Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald (25) is the only defender with more this season.

As a run defender, Ford isn’t among the league’s best, ranking 21st among 47 qualifiers in run-defense grade (69.7). But, more importantly, he’s far from proven to be a liability against the run, which, when combined with his elite play as a pass-rusher, is more than enough for the Chiefs’ defense. He has recorded just six run stops and two tackles for loss/no gain and missed one tackle in run defense.

Yeah.

Offer him a contract but a reasonable one.

If we have the best pass rusher and still have shit defense, he obviously isn’t worth it.

F this

Pass rushers are like gold the way defense is hamstrung today.

We absolutely need to give him whatever the market demands.

Guess he'll be getting franchise tagged this year. Probably could have extended him cheap prior to this season. Now he's going to get top dollar.

Not unless he's VERY reasonable about it. He needs to prove it to me that he can get it done in a non-contact year and that he won't go down for an extended period of time yet again. Franchise tag. Then if he performs, we talk.

I saw that he was second in the NFL to say ks earlier today. Donald has 10. Chiefs are also second in the league in sacks. How can your pass rush be that good and the defense as a whole be so bad? It does give me hope though. The pass rush is good. The rookies are starting to flash. I'm not expecting them to be top ten. But if they can just be average, then this team can make some noise in the postseason.

Teams have to pass more because they are behind.

Exact same thing happened with the Peyton Colts. Get your edge speed rushers a lead and turn them lose.

Absolutely.

You always need to trust the pattern a player displays to continue.

Dee Ford has displayed a pattern of being either very effective, or not on the field due to injuries. A big part of that missed time is due to back problems, those kinds of problems rarely go away for good.

He told me at camp that after his surgery he feels better than he ever has...hopefully that continues but the team needs to protect itself by utilizing the franchise tag so Ford has a chance to form a new pattern. One that he can show to stay healthy and productive for 2 straight years.

Giving Ford a contract after an outlier year is bad business and a mistake this franchise made with Houston before him.

The smart move for Veach is to franchise tag Ford after this year and if he replicated tthis season next year and he doesn’t have further injuries, then back up the brinks truck.

Franchise tag literally makes it a contract year.

I was worried this might happen.

If we pay him, he’ll get hurt.

If he walks, he’ll have a Hall of Fame career.

Why? Because, Chiefs.
