The Greatest Movie Franchises of All Time - Play-in Round

For a bit of offseason entertainment, I will be hosting a poll series tournament to determine the Greatest Movie Franchises of All Time. Nominations were collected in this thread in the media center, and they were seeded based on their estimated ticket sales on Box Office Mojo. Nominees that had no data were randomly assigned a value generally in the range of the other nominees. You can view the full list of nominees and associated data here.

We had a total of 83 nominees, which means we need to eliminate 19 of them to get us down to 64 for the tournament bracket. In this round, we're going to do it all at once to figure out which of the bottom 39 make it in, so please review the list and vote for any you feel are deserving to be in the conversation for Greatest Movie Franchise of All Time. The top 20 will be selected for the tournament bracket in a few days.

You'll be able to follow the entire tournament bracket (including those that have already been seeded) as we progress here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...#gid=633401577

Possible Concerns and Responses:
  1. A franchise I like isn't on the list! Too bad. Nominations are closed. This is just a fun offseason diversion, but feel free to complain in the thread if it will make you feel better.
  2. There's something on the list that I don't even think is a franchise! Don't vote for it.
  3. There's something on the list that I don't recognize. Yeah, there are a few that I don't recognize either. If you feel generous, look it up and determine if you think it's worthy. Or just don't vote for it. Either option is allowed.

Begin!

Scroll up (or down depending on your view settings).

I added the list of the top seeds to the OP to hopefully eliminate some confusion.

The Hunger Games vs. The Dark Knight
The Matrix vs. The Godfather
Bourne vs. Pirates of the Caribbean
Toy Story vs. Smoky and the Bandit
Jurassic Park vs. Mission: Impossible
Back to the Future vs. Rocky

Was Prairie View vs. Fairleigh Dickinson and Arizona State vs. St John's the most exciting night of the NCAA tournament? No. But we have to get through it to get to the real matchups.

Final Four of this round? Or of the entire tournament?

Unless something weird happens, it'll definitely make it out of this round, but I'm skeptical it'll be able to hold up against the rest of the field.

I was wondering this myself. I think I'll probably lean more toward your rule as well.

Like, Jurassic Park vs Mission: Impossivle for instance. On the whole, M: I is clearly the higher average quality per movie, but Jurassic Park is one of the best movies of all time so its peak is much higher, in my opinion. Despite the lackluster sequels, I wouldn't want to live in a world without JP. I could live without M: I.

Really, though?

Alien and Aliens are a couple of my favorite movies ever, but Alien 3, Resurrection, Prometheus and Covenant all range from absurd to downright shit.

Gah. I'm a dumbass and was reading the wrong column from Box Office Mojo, so the seeding is a little wonky. (I was reading the column for number of tickets for the BIGGEST FILM in each franchise rather than the OVERALL TOTAL.)

Thankfully, those two tend to correlate pretty closely, so it's generally not that big of a deal, and most of the ones that were borderline in the first place are at the top of this poll. I'll still pick up the top 20 from this poll, then re-seed based on the correct number. The matchups I had mentioned earlier will shift, though.

On the plus side, we now get a first-round matchup between Dirty Harry and Toy Story, which makes me chuckle.
