Defense against Detroit was Hot & Cold

They were worked over early but when they started standing up our offense shat themselves. In a game that Pat Mahomes arguably looked like shit for a lot of it, the defense kept us in the game whether you realize it or not.

We don't win this game without a heads up play on a forced fumble and a TD return by Breeland.

We put the defense in terrible position several times with turnovers.

When the defense got stops the offense and Mahomes crapped down their leg.

Our special teams tried to single handedly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and luckily failed.

Mahomes was off today. Shit is gonna happen but this was a terrible game for him overall.

Our O-Line sucked
Watkins sucked

The defense did what they needed to do. They gave the offense a chance at a game winning drive. Not ideal but given what they were handed they did their job.

You can bitch and cry about Clark all you want. It's bullshit but whatever. The defense got some key stops and gave this offense every chance to run away with this game. Luckily the offense finally capitalized when it mattered.

We have a lot of work to do on defense still but overall this defense is better than last year. We have got to get more solid up the middle against the run. That is still the biggest deficiency on this defense.

This looks like the best place to offer up a nickname for Ward. I think from now on, Ward needs to be called..............
The Burn Ward

He's earned it.

Can you imagine being the Lions?

At a home game, you hold the best offense in the NFL in check most of the game, get turnovers and rush for almost 200 yards on the ground.

And still lose the game.

It is all because we now have a QB that even on an off game throws for over 300 yards and a game winning drive.

I don't think anyone would say the defense is GREAT.

I don't think anyone would say Clark has been AWESOME.

It's a new defensive scheme with a ton of guys that are getting used to playing together, and they're four games in. I see positive signs, and I see some plays where guys are just a step slow to their assignments, which I believe is a sign of 'thinking' rather than just instinctively reacting. It's not all of the time, but it IS some of the time.

Also, keep in mind that this isn't a regular defensive line scheme; there are a lot of stunts and moving guys around. While I think this will in time pay dividends, it does mean that there's more teamwork and playing off of each other happening there as well, compared to a typical straight up front.

I don't feel like I'm making excuses, I just feel like my expectations are for them to get a little better each week, and while the numbers may not say that all of the time, I think it's clear that they made some plays that won the game for the team on a day in which Mahomes was not nearly as sharp as he usually is.

Plus, we get Claiborne back next week, right? Hopefully he's been getting mental reps.

The biggest difference I see is that last year, you had a defensive scheme that had been installed for YEARS, with a bunch of players that had played in it for YEARS and they were bad all year and never got better.

This year there are similar numbers so far, but I already see signs of what it might look like when these guys are all on the same page.

Detroit isn't the same old Detroit either; and Matt Stafford is one of the sad stories of the NFL in my opinion. I think he's an elite QB talent that has wasted his career in a shit organization for a decade. They finally got him a decent coach and are putting some pieces around him. I'd bet they're a play-off team come January.

On a day in which we were VERY sloppy offensively, we needed the defense to make some plays, and they did. Breeland's head's up play on that fumble made the difference.

I'll wait to declare it a failure for awhile.

I spoke to a handful of Lions fans before the game. They were resigned to either being blown out magnificently by the greatness of Mahomes or losing in soul-crushing fashion by less than a TD. I actually kinda feel bad for them because they've been more hapless as a franchise than even the Chiefs.

I find Chris Jones concerning, he's still doing the same thing. He'll dominate the man in front of him and look incredible but at the same time he completely abandons his gaps on running plays and lets guards get to the LBs.

It's frustrating the new coaching staff can't get him to stop doing that shit.

It's better than last year but not by much. It seems they still need the offense to have a negative play..penalty or sack and get them in 3rd and long to succeed. They still have trouble getting off the field on 3rd down, and none of them can tackle worth a shit. If they would just learn to ****ing tackle that would go a long way. Then as mentioned above, Ward doesn't get his head around or he would have several easy pass break ups or even picks. Seems the defensive coaching staff aren't coaching guys on their weaknesses

Had the Lions not been futile in the redzone, Chiefs lose yesterday.

Defense still getting gashed vs the run and Ward struggles.

Some of that hopefully gets better with more reps, getting beat that bad vs the run isn't gonna work.

I was impressed with the defense during the craziness of the 3rd quarter. The Chiefs kept turning it over on their end of the field. The Lions could have put the game away right there. But the defense went out there and got the ball back twice, including getting it back inside the 1 and returning it for a TD for us. The defense definitely saved the day. Today is not a day to fuss about the defense. Yes, they gave up some big plays. But, you save the game after the offense puts the team in bad shape, all is forgiven. For this week anyway.

This is why the Chiefs haven't done his extension yet. Wants paid elite money but isn't a complete player. Not as big of a "one-trick pony" as Ford was but still undisciplined enough to cause problems.

I said it yesterday they are bipolar. Maybe we should call them the Schizo Defense.

They do look improved at times and they look the same at times. Ward sucks balls I hope Clairborne is an upgrade.

Turning the ball over 4 times on the road and still winning is huge.

How is it a team like Green Bay can completely turn around a shit defense and make it a team strength, whereas KC is going on three straight years of investing millions of dollars, numerous high draft picks, and a complete turnover of the coaching staff and our defense is still complete ass? What gives? I'm pretty sure you could take our entire defensive roster, give them to a defensive mastermind like Belichick, and they'd be top 10 somehow. It's like there's something in the water in KC that makes defenders become reeruned.
