Late night bullshit: I don't think Chris Jones is going to bring in a haul.

I don't.

Which is problematic.

My read on the situation: Jones and Veach have, together, effed this thing up. I have no official information, because I never do; I'm just reading tea leafs.

1. Jones asked for too much money, and the Chiefs have rightly decided they cannot afford him. So Veach may have been shopping, and the Colts may have been a target, but the 49ers beat them to the punch by getting the Colts' 1st rounder with Buckner.

2. It's extremely unlikely that two teams out of 32 are willing to part with 1st round picks in order to secure an interior DL, which of course is what Jones is worth.

3. And if that's the case, the Chiefs really have two options: keep Jones, or sell him for however many 2nd day picks they can secure.

4. I think it makes more sense to keep him for another year, since a $16m tag is a great deal for Jones when other elite DTs are earning $4-$6m more. It will completely rake our ability to sign any FAs of note, however, and really any of our own FAs as well.

5. That just means we're going to get boned even more next year, though, for two reasons:
---> we'll be moving on to the 2nd year of Mahomes' incoming monstrous deal
---> teams know that if we couldn't afford Jones in 2020, we definitely can't afford him in 2021

6. Tagging Jones also makes inking Mahomes insanely difficult this offseason, which means you give it a go next year, but the risk of not getting him inked grows. And you absolutely cannot risk it with Mahomes: you must get him signed long-term.

I've been Chicken Little plenty of times on this site and been wrong, but this is an instance I see the Chiefs facing some deep difficulties fielding a well-rounded roster next year.

I mean think of it this way: the Chiefs lose Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller (edit: Fuller gone) because they can't afford them, can't ink Chris Harris because they can't afford him, and now have just a couple actual corners on the roster. I love our defensive coaches as much as the next guy but now you're drafting corners for need instead of going BPA because you have no other options.

Find a way to trade up in this year's draft & get Isaiah Simmons from Clemson. He's gonna be a superstar plus he's from KC. What would it take to make a trade with Detroit?

I get that and I didn't say that's what I want them to do. Just a hunch that's what's going to happen.

Let’s not forget that. Breeland was a fairly cheap 1 year deal. Ward was a small trade. Fenton was a 6th rounder.

I think Veach has proven that he can fine quality corners a lot of different ways and we will absolutely be using a 1st or 2nd on one. Relax.
I'd honestly bet that the Chiefs cap % spent on corners in 2019 is the lowest of any Super Bowl team ever. It was an incredible feat.

A feat I'm not sure we should bank on them replicating.

Are you advocating for Jones to be retained on the tag?

We don't have much draft capital in 2020.

Why? In terms of starters, you’re literally losing Breeland. That’s it. You’re overthinking it.

Jones will either be re-signed or traded.

Why would the Chiefs handcuff themselves that way?

If they sit on his cap number for an extended period of time, they cannot acquire FA’s. They either trade him soon, extend him soon OR he plays 2020 on the tag.

I have full trust in our staff bc it wasn’t just corner that they got the most out of.

Tanoh was thought for dead, no? He was literally thought of as nonexistent and yet they got a shit ton out of him.
Same for Emmanuel Ogbah. Same for Damien Wilson. Same for Rashad Fenton.

This is the path you have to take moving forward when you’ve got star players. I trust them to find those types of guys on rookie sized deals.

I think that after last year, they earned that trust.

It happens sometimes in the NFL, team plans on having player stock around on the tag, then as the offseason progresses things continue to sour between player and team. Then the team trades the player before the season starts. I think this might be one of those situations.

I disagree.

Teams are spending and moving players like crazy because they all know the cap is going way up next season. First, that could mean that the Chiefs just sign Jones, which should be easy now that Colts traded for and sign Deforest Buckner. And I wouldn't rule out a trade. The issue is that a few teams have a ton of picks in the early rounds of this draft. Will be interesting, but I think something gets done soon.

[QUOTE=RunKC;14847261]Our staff made a cornerback room comprised of Ward, Fuller, Breeland, Fenton and Claiborne look like an very solid unit. Why can’t they continue to do that? /QUOTE]

When did Claiborne even play and when he did he sucked cock.

Fenton played little.

I think you're being a little too kind

It's interesting Jones hasn't been traded, yet. I do wonder about the market. Clearly, the Chiefs haven't accepted a deal. Are they holding out for more? Are Jones' contract demands too great?
