Will home field advantage be severely neutered IF

the stadiums are only allowed to sparcely populate ? Not if you have Mahomes like we do but I think it significantly dampens many teams chances IMHO of pulling the upset at home.

There won't be a homefield advantage, it will favor the better teams and probably lead to more offense also.

Basically the really good teams with high end offenses are less likely to be upset so things may play more in line than usual.

There was a really interesting study done on this a season or so again and the conclusion was that Arrowhead actually provided one of the worst 'homefield advantages' in football.

The problem wasn't that the Chiefs played poorly at home - they didn't. They played pretty well by and large. But homefield advantage is a relative thing and the Chiefs actually played substantially better on the road.

So if you're asking what advantage the Chiefs gained by playing in Arrowhead, there really was none and in fact when the study was done, they had played worse at home than they had on the road for a period of several years.

Arrowhead's a great atmosphere, no doubt. But historically speaking the Chiefs play well at home when they play well period. Being in Arrowhead hasn't given them a real advantage on the scoreboard beyond their true talent level.

It might be interesting to see how much impact crowd noise really does have on the visiting offensive line. If we have games with no crowds this year that could be a great comparison to previous seasons too.

I know the volume level at Arrowhead sure used to get to Elway.

To be honest, I've noticed our offensive line jumping early at home more than the opponents.

I just think teams have come up with so many tricks to combat the crowd noise that it's hardly a factor anymore. Even a decade or so ago (when we had far smaller crowds) I remember the 'crowd penalties' tracker they had on the scoreboard being 2-3/gm. I think last year there were maybe 20 something total.

Teams just practice this stuff more than they used to and the connected helmets make it much faster/easier to get plays in, etc...

The crowds have been good the last 3-4 years, but it just doesn't have the impact it used to.

I wonder if we were a little better on the road because a plane ride and night away from home allows time to focus on the opponent?

Perhaps, that is recent trend under Andy Reid.

Reid seems to prepare the team better than previous Chiefs coaches for playing on the road, but has not gone 8-0 at home like Marty Schottenheimer or Dick Vermeil. Seems like there is one or two unexpected losses at home each year, maybe previous defensive approach had something to do with that.

Under Reid, Chiefs had a 7-1 home record in 2018.

Sparsely populated ones - NFL stadiums will be jammed packed for 2 reasons: NFL is NFL and all other major sports got cancelled so this will be the only sports outlet for many many fans.
