Clock doesn't start until the ball is touched. Chief player can kneel after obtaining possession and only 1 second runs off the clock.

I don't know if a squib kick would have been the right call.

1) I've seen some huge returns on squibs even if the goal is to not have one.
2) One bad hop and that puts KC at the 40, which is nearly as bad.
3) KC player could have immediately taken a knee and called timeout with the ball likely near the 25 anyhow with only a loss of 1 second.

With a normal kickoff, you're putting it on your D to keep a team from gaining 40 yards in 13 seconds without risking so much. So long as your kicker can boot an unreturnable ball, you have to take that chance above all others IMO.

Everyone asking this question is discounting the magic that we just witnessed. Teams don’t do that in 13 seconds. There’s more risk in squibbing. Why expose yourself to any risk when there’s only 13 seconds.

Squib kick would have killed a few seconds but you are giving up 20 to 25 yards in field position though. And there is always the Jon Baker factor.

I feel like the best move is a high kick that lands at the 5 yard line and forces a return. You risk a big return, but you guarantee some time off the clock and most likely the bar doesn’t end up much Past the 30
