Host Cities

Just got a question about host cities for the Super Bowl as I would have assumed they would share it around far more but looking at the recent list there is a huge bias towards both NFC stadiums and Southern States.

In most European sports like football there is a culture and tradition of neutral venues for big finals yet with some of the recent choices there were always going to be a strong chance of the home team making it and stacking the odds further in favour of one side.

I noted that Arrowhead has not hosted in at least 30 years. Is that due to the trend towards the big States or wanting to showcase the shiny new Stadiums like So-Fi this year and Raiders Vegas stadium in a couple of years time.

There does not seem to be much fairness in the allocation but you guys are much much longer term followers than me so all insights are welcomed.

You also have 5 weeks minimum. If you take out every team that made the playoffs as a host city.

This.

The Super Bowl game itself is now just a part of a comprehensive hosting experience… corporate events/parties, NFL Honors, Radio Row, etc.

when the super bowl was in San Diego (97 I think when it should have been us vs Packers).......

Every single available space in your downtown/central entertainment district is in-use. I remember little holes in the wall that didnt exist prior, were open with basically a pop-up bar and liquor license, selling booze. That's in addition to your normal restaurants/bars/etc. There's that many people in your town, and there's that many lines just to get a drink.

And that starts about a week or two before the super bowl........and it's every night. Not just the weekend.

You also assume every SB has to be as big or bigger than the last. Can you play an NFL game in any NFL stadium.... yes.
Does each NFL city have enough to support for say 400% of what a normal game date has....yes.
Remember you can only have x amount in attendance. So radio row is smaller in some places... doesnt change the experience for the vast majority. But what it does do is help each NFL city , not just a select few. Say any city pulls in 20% of what LA did in the last 2 weeks, you dont think every city deserves that that more than likely helped pay for the stadium in the first place?

I was living in Arlington at that time. In the 6 years I lived there, that was by far the worst winter weather we had.

Miami and Los Angeles are probably the two best spots that a Super Bowl could be held at. Those cities are designed for parties and crowds.

And even Miami had to go through a rigorous bidding process to get the Super Bowl again two years ago after being out of the hosting rotation for 10+ years.

They had to spend $800+ million in stadium upgrades, provide detailed logistical plans for NFL Honors and all of the expanded game week events, etc.

Much more is required from host cities now than even as recently as 20-25 years ago.

No, I'm saying the NFL sets up venues for all of the various events months in advance (and years in some cases). You can't just snap your fingers and move it to a different city with a few weeks' notice and hope to keep the events anywhere near as robust as they do. There's a reason they pick host cities years in advance.
