Are bad games by definition low-scoring games?

I was pondering this in light of the alleged game last night.

We obviously had poor play by the offenses, and nobody crossed the goal line. It's hard to tell if the defenses were good or bad because the offenses were self-destructing without much work by the defenses.

Then we hear this morning in the media about other "bad games" in NFL history, and they're always games where a smattering of field goals was the only scoring.

So I have a two-part question based on that discussion.

First, if you have a game that ends up with a 59-48 score, either the offenses were completely dominant or the defenses were terrible. Is that a "bad game"? Or is a bad game solely the realm of bad offenses?

Second, if you have a game that ends up with a 12-9 score, is it always a bad game? Can you have a game where the defenses are amazing and they're shutting down adequate offenses? Is that a good game?

Last night's game was obviously bad, and after thinking about it, I've concluded that it was bad in large part because the two quarterbacks spent a lot of time chucking the ball into empty parts of the field or into the sidelines. Is that what's really the identifier of a bad game? I can kind of see that, because it's a non-productive play that probably wasn't the result of good defense and probably was the result of uncontested errors that essentially waste time.

What do you think? What's the driving force that makes a bad game a bad game?

But the KU National Championship game was incredible.

This.

A low scoring game because of two great defenses are playing is a good thing. It is fun to watch the chess match as the offenses figure out how to score.

Low scoring games because of bad/sloppy offense sucks.

The worst game I ever saw was a 2011 game between the Bears and Chiefs at Soldier Field, and sadly I was there in person. Both teams sucked that year. Orton was our starter, and IIRC was in for one play, got hurt and didn't return. Palko played the remainder. The only touchdown scored by either team was a pure shitluck Hail Mary (for us) at the end of the first half. Other than that, just a couple of field goals. The final score was 10-3. It's not like either defense was good, either; both offenses were simply inept. It was awful. I'm surprised the punters' legs didn't fall off.

The Chiefs won, but no one cared. Fans of both teams filed out of the stadium in stunned silence. Ugh.

Americans Like Scoring.

Its one reason the other football game, sometimes called soccer, has trouble catching on.

VARSITY
This discussion is making me realize that it's not possible to define a good game or bad game with those adjectives. There are three axes for defining games.

Well-played versus poorly played.
Close versus uncontested (e.g., more than a one-score game for most of the game)
Entertaining (i.e, big plays on either side of the ball) versus boring (no big plays)

So we have eight types of games. Let's name the types.

Epic - Well-played, close, and entertaining
Classic - Well-played, close, and boring
Circus - Well-played, uncontested, and entertaining
Clinical - Well-played, uncontested, and boring
Hoot - Poorly played, close, and entertaining
Cringe - Poorly played, close, and boring
Playground - Poorly played, uncontested, and entertaining
Snoozer - Poorly played, uncontested, and boring

I'm open to better names. This is based on 60 seconds of thought.

nah

I actually liked watching some of the great defenses that won championships, except for that last broncos win of course.

the Ravens with Ray Lewis and Goose with Trent Dilfer as their QB was cool to see. The Buccs championship with Sapp, Brooks, Barber and Lynch was a badass defense.

Can't argue with that. The best baseball game I ever saw was a Mets/Cubs game at Wrigley when the wind was blowing out. The final score was 14-10. I don't even remember who won, and I didn't give a crap about either team, but it was fun as hell. Gary Gaetti hit a grand slam - the only one I've ever seen in person.

When it comes to football, I like blowouts when the Chiefs win. **** nailbiters.

I almost cited that one. Shaun King wasn't great, but he was pretty decent in that era. But it was a couple of leviathan defensive efforts to keep that game that low scoring and close. And Proehl's over the shoulder catch for the one TD of the game was legendary clutch.

And that play in isolation doesn't capture the piss pounding the Bucs were putting on at all three levels of the D. And then the Rams D had to play 3 level pisspound to close out that game as well.

Seeing Mahomes taken off the field so backup gets some snaps in a sure win is like parking your brand new, shiny, Tacoma in the garage after some dickbag almost hits you in the parking lot.

Sigh of relief.

Defenses are so bad in 2022 it's ok to let them dominate in a few games, as long as it doesn't start happening consistently.

More scoring usually equals more action and excitement… even if it involves bad teams.

Look at Seattle/Detoilet this weekend.

By definition a good game is any game in which the Chiefs come out victorious. However, games where the Chargers, Broncos, or Raiders loss are also considered to be good games. So yeah I can see how this is confusing.

For the record I thought last nights game was incredible

There’s definitely been well played games that were low scoring, but last night was not one of them. That game was like watching 5 quarters of 3rd and 4th stringers playing the last preseason game in a hurricane.
