Glad you brought it up because it's the quintessential Bill Self team as of late. A team that was eking out wins vs inferior competition (+2 vs Purdue, +3 vs NC State, and then +2 vs Ohio State). We scored in that run:

65 vs Det
60 vs Purdue
63 vs. NC State
80 vs UNC (13 in the last few min)
64 vs Ohio State
59 vs Kentucky

Just garbage offensive performances where we scored almost never out of a regular half-court set. (Robinson stickbacks and EJ-Releford-Ty in transition were the offense)

Quote:
Bill WANTS to play with an efficient offense. That's why he wants to put it inside to the big men. That's where you score the most efficiently. It's not from jump shooting.

Says who? The NCAAT the past few years has completely turned this old belief into a relic. Michigan beat us with an extreme offense + no def. UCONN win with guards shooting threes. And this year's NCAAT is a blinding example that post guys are (largely) worthless.

Quote:
The fatal flaw lately has been a lack of a post presence come tourney time. Missing Embiid and now missing Alexander with a hobbling Ellis. The problem isn't that we don't have good shooters. We do. But the inside-out game only works when the defense has to collapse inside to stop the post scoring, which we haven't been able to force. That's what frees up the shooting. When our big guys can't go 1-on-1 in the post, the offense stalls.

It's not that the offense is flawed or somehow inherently prone to failure. It's the lack of the personnel to run it. Bill's flaw is not being able to adjust to the personnel he has. When he has the personnel, it's going to work beautifully. And I think we'll be getting back to that much sooner than later.
Tomorrow night we will see 1 post guy on the court. Only 1. We will see 6-8 Sam Dekker and 6-5 Justice Winslow as the power forwards. We'll see Duke playing four guys who are 6-0, 6-0, 6-4, 6-5. And they defend and board just fine. Wisky absolutely mauled Kentucky on the boards with a much shorter lineup. Spacing the court will allow that.

Quote:
No one was complaining about our outside shooting when Bill was running the same offense in 07 and 08. Chalmers and Rush shot great outside, but it was the inside game that made the offense work. It will happen again.
Rush shot 49% from deep and Chalmers 47% that year. They were absolute assassins from the perimeter. The exception to the rule.

So, we won because of defense. Went to the National Championship game and lost to a better defensive team. Okay, thanks.

All of this has NOTHING to do with what I said. I said Bill wants to run an efficient offense, and you do that by scoring easy buckets. Easy buckets are those close to the basket.

Duke has the 12th ranked defensive efficiency this year. UK number 1. Both Final Four teams.

And you can say that offenses and no defense made it far, but you can also say they didn't. Iowa State has a really efficient offense. UNC, Northern Iowa, Arizona, Villanova, Gonzaga, WSU, Xavier, Indiana, Davidson, BYU, Oregon, Baylor, Virginia . . . all super efficient offenses, with varying degrees of defense. And none are Final Four teams.

Post guys are worthless? UK made it 38 games undefeated purely because of their post guys. They lost last night because Towns, who is pretty much automatic when closer than 10 feet to the bucket, got almost no touches in the last 5 minutes of the game. UK beat ND, who, despite shooting hot from the outside, had no answer for Towns inside on defense. He was automatic.

It's not an exception to the rule. It's how Bill's offense works when it has all the pieces.

I've offered up my thesis for Bills repeated struggles in the tourney (turnovers & garbage halfcourt offensive sets). Feel free to post yours. I haven't seen your explanation.

In 2012, Missouri was the best offensive team in the country in adjusted efficiency by a wide margin and were the 4th best since 2002 behind Chris Paul's Wake Forest in 2005 (lost in R32 to Mike Gansey and Kevin Pittsnogle), 2014 Michigan (lost to UK in the E8), and this year's Wisconsin (TBD). They lost to Norfolk State in the first round in the biggest upset in NCAA tournament history (by point spread). It helps to be able to guard somebody.

I'm certainly guilty of not understanding the genius of the Self "triple weave" up top of the key. I'm sure there's some brilliant strategy behind it, since most defenses have a WTF? look in their faces whenever start to run it.

It looks a lot like those Shriners clown cars you see in parades.

The triple weave is that it slowly creates driving lanes at the top of the key, because the defenders are reacting to the ball movement. Not that Self created it, but he's been doing it since he got to KU, and you're actually starting to see it permeate all levels of the game, including the pros. However, they have less shot clock time to build those lanes out. However, they are much quicker and better shooters, so they need less of an opportunity to take advantage of the defense being out of position.

Tell me more about Bill Selfs "weave" is it true that he is a master of it? Can the weave be used in a swimming pool? Does the weave require glue? Most importantly can the weave stand up to a Cat 5 tornado? Please, do tell.

Larry Kyrstkowiak runs it at Utah and he got pretty good results out of it the last two seasons once the players became familiar with it.

From a subjective standpoint, the problem that I see with Bill's recent tournament teams is that there isn't a psychological continuity in the teams due to the reliance on the now constantly rotating influx freshman talent.

Sure, you want to say that by the end of the season these guys aren't freshman, but they are, especially when the pressure of performaning on that bigger stage mandates a higher degree of focus and instinct. Freshman looking to get drafted are potentially going to think more and react less than guys who have been there and understand the situation.

I know that you posted that because they have Iowa State at #2, but having KU that high is ridiculously stupid.

KU could be in serious trouble next year.

On paper, it's a pretty ugly team.
