Schefter: Steelers Contacting Teams to Trade Big Ben for Top 10 pick

http://twitter.com/adam_schefter
Pittsburgh has begun contacting teams to trade Ben Roethlisberger for a top 10 pick. At least one team considering it. Story far from done.

Just throwing this out there.

This place was almost universally in the "everyone deserves a second chance" club when it came to Michael Vick - who was charged and convicted of his crimes.

This place is still butthurt about trading Jared Allen, who people seemed to have no problem giving a second, third and fourth chance - again, for crimes he was charged and convicted for.

Seems to me that people are all for giving people a second chance, provided they like said person.

And FTR, I'm indifferent. He's not on my team, so until he is, I'm not going to get concerned over it. However, I'm not a big fan of people throwing around the word "rapist" when the man wasn't even charged with rape, much less convicted.

I don't think so, but we were winning (somewhat).

He didn't blow up until 2005, so no one probably gave two-shits about him before he exploded onto the scene and got paid.

Goodell is doing his best to avoid that stereotype.
I think it's a smart move. They're the most popular sport in the US by a fairly wide margin - the ****ing draft, not even a game, is going to beat the NBA playoffs in ratings - and it's pretty clear they want to keep it that way by taking their public image so seriously.

And it's a proactive approach. The punishments are severe because they're intended to be a deterrent, to keep players from getting themselves into these situations to begin with.

After the first situation and the motorcycle accident and now this, I can see why Pittsburgh would be willing to listen to offers now. Nothing he's done off-the-field so far makes him look like he's a very bright guy. Hell, when Terry fucking Bradshaw's calling you a dummy....

I'm all for giving people a second chance, but Vick is certainly not someone in my book that deserves a second chance.

While the NBA might be too lax, the NFL seems a bit too aggressive.

Perhaps some middle ground is in order?

I actually like Roethlisberger, I just think he's thrown up enough red flags at this point to indicate a problem. Either way, I like him way, way, way more than I ever liked Jared Allen. I think I was one of the few who was glad to see him gone.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

The NBA is not near as bad as the NFL when it comes to thugs.

I don't think that's the perception, at least in non-NBA cities.

Mecca doesn't drink, but he'd probably allow Roethlisberger to get a little frisky near the La-Z-Boy.

I actually wouldn't be opposed to trading for him. It's just the idea of trading a top-10 pick for him that I don't go for. That's where the caution with regards to the red flags comes in. Too high a price for what I see as a legitimate risk, particularly with the looming suspension.

But I do disagree with Dane's assertion that he'd be vilified here. As I mentioned, I think he'd be a hero in this town, at least until he had his first bad game. There'd be some grumbling at the time of the trade, and I think the sports talk stations would do their best to fan the flames initially, but in the end I don't think the majority of the fans in KC would give a shit about his off-the-field stuff. I think a good number might even defend him (as we've already seen on this thread, and he's not even rumored to be a Chief, much less is one...). In the end, I think it would all come down to wins and losses. Assuming he kept his nose clean from this point forward...
