FCC Could Ban The Word "Redskins" From Radio & TV - Are The "Chiefs" Next?

These political correctness people are driving me nuts.

If they get their way concerning the Redskins perhaps they will go after the "Chiefs" next.

"WASHINGTON, D.C. (GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL) — The Federal Communications Commission [FCC] could effectively ban the use of the word "Redskins" by broadcasters, based upon a filing by several former FCC commissioners and other communication law experts, if the team's name isn't changed, according to a letter sent Friday to team owner Dan Snyder which concluded that using the word "Redskin" on the air is likely to be contrary to federal broadcast law because it constitutes an "indecency" if not an "obscenity."

The letter from former FCC chairman Reed Hundt and 11 other broadcast law experts says the R-word is the most derogatory name a Native American can be called, and is an "unequivocal racial slur" akin to the N-word. They liken the use of "Redskin" to an "obscenity," which is illegal on the public airwaves in any form, rather than simply an "indecency" which is restricted to certain times of the day."

lolz. I just thought of Peeholi and a popular t-shirt from Eastern Europe when I lived there in '95:

Peeholi's MIB's might still be around to escort you to the exit, comrade.

Native American here. No, I don't mean I have a great great great uncle who had a little Cherokee blood either. I have a CDIB card and my dad grew up on a rez. I couldn't give 2 shits about this. It offends me in no way. I can see how it could have been offensive in the past, but it's now just as much a part of sports culture as it is N.A. culture.

The amount of money the US has thrown at the Native American community, including the Casinos and tax free cigarettes has been massive.

The State of Native America: Very Unemployed and Mostly Ignored

A survey of death certificates over a four-year period showed that deaths among Indians due to alcohol are about four times as common as in the general US population and are often due to traffic collisions and liver disease with homicide, suicide, and falls also contributing.

Well, Chiefspants did a good job of explaining what I was thinking.

It's really not a hard situation to grasp. Native Americans are doing fine- we arrive and **** shit up- the Native Americans are not doing fine.

Just consider the history and the circumstances is all I'm saying. I'm not even playing the white guilt card. The Native American community is facing the issues that they face today due in LARGE part to us. Its not a coincidence that very similar situations are affecting blacks in this country as well.

You don't understand. If the people who are being discriminated against can't even tell they are being discriminated against, then it is up to us as good, upstanding political-correctors to make them see the light.

If you can't be part of the problem, then quit trying to be part of a solution.

I guess I'm failing to see why you'd think I would want / allow someone else to judge me or control what I said or did, if it didn't violate any laws....

I am all for protecting rights.....

But you don't have a right to not be offended, last I checked.

One person's 'asshole' is another person's hero, and I hope you'll forgive me for insisting that I make that call for myself...and I'll fight to protect your right to do likewise.

It's also amazing to see the extent people will go to to get offended by tame comments that reference race or sexual orientation, just because they want something to cry about.

Also, I just want to point out that Thatguy recently thought the word, "milieu" was racist.

I don't feel sorry for Washington at all, and this will have no impact on the Chiefs. "Redskins" is obviously a racist team name, and that team deserves all the grief they get.

Another thing that is going on which I don't believe was mentioned, is that in a separate lawsuit, the Redskins may soon lose their trademark protection. I can't imagine the NFL would put up with losing economic licensing control over one of their teams.

This doesn't make any sense. That would be like a KKK member becoming the owner of a sports team and naming it the N word. Doesn't sound very likely.
