That's also the best way to generate backspin on the baseball, which causes it to travel and carry the farthest.

Jeff Francoeur's swing is/was also a great example of what happens when your swing is loopy.

Chase Utley is a great example of hitting for power with a short, compact swing. When I was briefly excited/optimistic about Moose's performance in spring, it was because his swing looked a lot like Utley's... much shorter and more compact.

Obviously, that was a mirage.

His hips need to go first. Rotational hitting. If his hips go first, his hands should follow a similar path and should cross the strike zone with all the bat and finish with a slight upward swing, naturally. Trying to hit with a downward swing you literally have one crossing point that creates in X in the strike zone... If the ball and bat don't meet EXACTLY right in the middle of that X... It's ground outs and pop outs for days. Leaving a very small margin of error to hit that way.
