Matt Cassel: Good or Bad?

We may as well have an easy point of reference for people to be able to come back and eat their crow when this all pans out. Everyone always says I knew it all along. Step up and put it down.

I don't think a 2nd round pick is terrible, but I don't think Matt Cassel will pan out in KC. I'll put it down right here, right now. And now I'll start praying I'm wrong.

Forget the trade. The only thing I want you to commit too is whether or not Cassel is a good or bad choice for QBOTF.

Let's take a look.

One of the losses against a winning team came against the Dolphins, Cassel's second start. They only scored 13, and lost by 25. They avenged that loss later in the year by scoring 48 and winning by 20.

San Diego beat them by 20 week 6 (start #4), 30-10.

(Week 7 they beat Denver 41-7, but that doesn't count, since the went .500).

They also split with the Jets, and the game that they lost the Patriots offense put up 31 points.

3 point loss on the road week 9 to the Colts, who ended the season 12-4. Only scored 15 in that one.

The Steelers beat them badly week 13, 33-10.

(The Patriots beat the Cardinals 47-7 in week 16 - that's one of their 2 wins).

I didn't realize it until I looked at the schedule, but apparently they didn't lose to a single team with a losing record. SD was 8-8. The Jets were 9-7. The Dolphins were 11-5. The Colts and Steelers were 12-4. That's 3 division winners, a 12-4 wild card team and a division opponent.
I used that argument because so many people have downplayed Sanchez's potential because he played a weak schedule.

FYI, I'm one of the people who voted "bad". You don't have to convince me of anything. I just thought it was an odd argument.

I get the context now. And that's always a bad argument, because a team can only play who's on their schedule. And when you win a lot of games, odds are at least a couple of your wins will be what keeps a team at or below .500, so you're hurting your own SoS by winning.

This guy has four years on a rookie which gives him less time to reach his prime, which should be about now but he's still learning.

The age thing bothers me too. Someone on a different thread was implying that Cassel has a 10-year career ahead of him with the Chiefs?

I can be a homer too, but THAT was just a ridiculous statement.

Well, he's going to get his test big time withe Chiefs 2009 schedule, and better to find out sooner how this guy can roll than later.

Personally, I attribute the trade and the overall tack Pioli is taking to the utter failure of Carl/Herm.

It's no secret that wins put asses in the seats, and the last two years have been pretty bad in that regard. And of course, that translates to loss of revenue.

For people to say that there is "absolutely no quick-fix going on here", is not an honest statement. So in my opinion, the real test for Cassel and Pioli is not 2009.

The REAL test for these two will be the 2011 season when this team starts to make runs in the post-season.

And I wish them the best; I'm tired of losing too.

Just think of it as having drafted Cassel a few years ago, and he's just now ready to start.

If you live in either Delaware or Pennsylvania and play the Powerball, there may be a chance that you split a 173 million dollar jackpot.

Sure, except the case that I outlined is essentially true. You have a 26 year-old QB with successful starting experience and a bunch of upside. Who cares who drafted him?

Unless the move is just horribly, unrepentantly wrong, you have to find the upside in situations like these.

Care to venture a guess as to which particular aspect of this move pleases me most?

And in all honesty, as it relates to just playing ability, I see a LOT of Mark Sanchez in Cassel's game.
That said, I'm on a quest to find as many 2008 Pat games as I can find and watch, just to make sure I'm not fooling myself.
