Peacock exclusive playoff game is stupid

Bad move by the league. Quit being greedy and keeping your customers from watching your product.

Surely they wont put Mahomes in that game but who knows.

Do you see them getting rid of cable/satelite/YouTubeTV/fubo/Sling/whatever on top of that? Because at that point you're probably at $100/month, which is more than I've ever paid for cable/satellite.

I could see the over the air options going away, but could see ESPN holding onto exclusive rights on their channels that you can't view on espn+.

I'm at $300 for cable but it includes peacock netflix and hbo max. Plus the fastest internet for home use and the home phone.

Then $15 for Disney + which gets you hulu and espn+ too and $15 for Amazon.

Someone needs to step in.

I realized at long last what bothers me so much about this.

The bottom line is that I'm the historic customer. I watch NFL games, and advertisers have historically paid the mainstream stations so they can get their product in front of me, and maybe I'll buy it. That's the relationship, but it's built on the foundation of me as the NFL's customer, making the effort to turn on the TV and watch their games.

Moves like the stupid peacock thing are a decision that the NFL is making against my best interests. They essentially gave me a big middle finger and said, "We're going to sell the game to this network that you don't subscribe to, because that network is paying us money. So you, you stupid customer, go pay them and get a subscription so we can make more money.

The NFL intentionally took an action to cause me hassle and cost, so that they could make more money. The assumption, I guess, is that I'll blindly follow. Or maybe the assumption is that there are people on stupid peacock now who don't know anything about football, but they'll watch the game and suddenly become football fans. I can't imagine that the second assumption has any truth to it, so it's got to be the first assumption. And in my case, that's an incorrect assumption. I love watching football, but I'm going in the other direction on buying subscriptions and having screen time. My market forces for not paying for more services is stronger than my desire to watch more football.

I personally don't pay for any of those.

My best financial decision in years has been to cancel cable and buy an over-the-air antenna. For under $20 as a one-time cost, I now get most of the television that I desire. Before high-definition television I couldn't get a good over-the-air signal, but now I can the classic networks and probably half a dozen other stations that are interesting, as well as another 15 or 20 that I'll never watch (Spanish, home shopping, religious, etc.)

My wife likes netflix, and we have Amazon Prime, so I can get those two things as well. But I wouldn't pay for them if my wife didn't want them. I watch something maybe once a month on those services.

Well I have not been on cable for over 10 years. If they go down this road they will be losing me as a viewer. I know, who cares right? If there are enough people like me out there maybe they will listen. Probably not but some of us do have a line.

What really gets me about the push to streaming is that isp's have monthly overage charges as well. They always find a way to get you in the end.

ESPN, mostly, so they can keep charging cable/satellite providers far more than other channels while also charging customers for ESPN+.

AFAIK, there's still content on ESPN/2 that you can only stream on ESPN+ if you have cable or satellite, but I haven't tried in a while, so could be wrong.

And I'm coming at this from the perspective of anyone who doesn't want to mess with illegal streams or IPTV options. I have access to YTTV (but don't pay for it) and pay for ESPN+ and Hulu ("free" with a cell phone plan), and totally willing to find other streaming options.

But, it's obnoxious to want to be "shut up and take my money" guy to watch sports, yet there are now zero good options now besides "just sign up for these 10 platforms".

It wasn't that long ago I paid ~$90/month for TWC ($130 including internet) and had the sports add on that gave me all the college conference channels, NHLN, CBS Sports, FSN, etc. It was beautiful.

Maybe your approach is far different than mine, but even if I'm not watching games with a group, I've got a half dozen people texting me, I'm on ChiefsPlanet and Twitter, etc. And there is absolutely zero chance that I'd be able to make it to the next day without having the ending spoiled. It would completely ruin the entire experience of football for me, and it's hard for me to understand how it wouldn't do the same for others.
Your approach is different than mine. I don't find it that hard to disconnect myself from electronics, and actual TV watching for me is getting more boring as the years go by. My attendance or watching of sports has no bearing on the outcome, so in my eyes it doesn't matter if I see it live or not as it relates to the quality of my day. Que sera, sera. Right?

Remember when we were told digital was going to be better. The signals do not travel as far.

Remember when we were told streaming and cord cutting was going to be easier. I claim BULLSHIT.

It has all been a money grab. By providers, internet companies and the government. Taking away analog tv to sell it to cell phone providers.

Rizzoli and Isles reruns are on StartTV ...OTA.
ION is OTA and runs all Law and Orders one day a week.

Depends on your approach, I suppose. I'm spending roughly $75/month less these days than I was 10 years ago, but it does take some effort to manage subscriptions and keep it efficient.

I used to watch recorded games more frequently, but for bigger games I tend to get pretty impatient knowing I could just look at the final score, so I'll start skipping over portions of the game to get to the good stuff.

I think that's similar to what you're saying... after so many years of watching sports, there's a ton of repetitive plays and so forth that's not vital to the viewing experience.

Unlike what you said though, the reasoning is exactly why I watch live... and like DaFace said, it's a whole event, whether it's talking about the game or shipping some BBQ from KC for the game, etc.

Yeah, if you're not emotionally invested in a game at all, then you're probably not missing anything and can obviously watch the fun parts later... I used to have a far bigger FOMO and over the years have realized I'm almost never missing out on something amazing.

OTOH, I'm glad I'm not completely at that point yet with several postseasons, even though I'll probably quickly be there with the NFL once Mahomes retires (I was basically there before he was drafted).

Of course the bottom line is all about money. But there are a couple other things at play. Young people don't watch TV the same way, they grew up in the world of Netflix and watching content on apps so I'm sure there's an element of genuinely trying to get out ahead of trends and keep their business model going in case there's a day where the over-the-air networks can't pay the kind of TV money they used to. The NFL is pretty ruthless about finding every edge they can find.

The other thing is, and I have zero statistics for this, but if you put something on a streaming service, you're definitely going to have those viewers locked in to your broadcast. If you're watching a MNF game between the Seahawks and Rams or whatever on cable, you can flip over during a commercial to watch a college basketball game or whatever else is on, but you aren't flipping from Peacock to Netflix or whatever the same way. So you have a better chance of viewers paying attention to your advertisers. We'll see if it plays out that way but I can see the logic to it.

The real tragedy is that these games aren't broadcast in 4K.
