Chiefs Are 'Badly' Trying To Trade Down To Middle Of First Round

Not sure if it has been posted.....

Chiefs Are 'Badly' Trying To Trade Down To Middle Of First*Round

by Joel Thorman on Apr 18, 2010 10:34 AM CDT in 2010 Campaign

Last year about this time, Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post first reported that the Chiefs were "in love" with LSU DE Tyson Jackson. A few days later and Jackson was the Chiefs pick in the draft.

Now Lombardi reports that the Chiefs are trying like hell to move down in the draft.

"The Chiefs are trying, and I mean really trying, to move down," Lombardi reports. "My sources tell me they'll be willing to go down as far as 15 for the right deal because they feel they can find a player in that range."

It's a fine line between trading down and trading down too far. According to Lombardi, our theory of the Eagles offering up the 24th and 37th picks for the Chiefs fifth pick doesn't look like it's happening. By staying around 15, they can still have a shot at a game changer -- Alabama LB Rolando McClain and Texas S Earl Thomas come to mind here -- as well as picking up extra selections.

That said, who's the Chiefs trading partner? SB Nation's Mocking The Draft takes an excellent look at this situation and comes to the conclusion that San Francisco might be the only team in that area that has a chance of moving up.

Lombardi reports the Chiefs are hoping someone wants to get in line to pick Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen.

Tank was a 3rd rounder.

Turk was a second.

Just because Vermeil sucked that doesn't give Herm a pass.

He had one draft that was very productive.

His 2006 draft was a pretty big pile of shit. There are just 3 picks from that draft still on the roster - Hali (good pick), Croyle (ehh), Page (good pick considering).
From the 2007 draft, we have TWO players still on the roster - Bowe (good pick), Kolby Smith (nothing great).

Think about that for one second. The 2006 and 2007 drafts gave us just 5 players with only 2 being starters. 2 ****ing players in drafts from 3-4 years ago. That's horrendus.

The 2008 draft was very good. Generally though, having 2 first round picks is a big advantage. Hitting on Flowers and Charles though is big time.

There is a massive myth on here that Herm was a really good drafter for this team.
I think the thing we saw from the prvious 2 draft and the '08 was the shift of emphasis.

Before '08, there was the belief that we still had a team capable of competing, so we were looking for immediate contributors, while in '08, the rebuild finally actually began in earnest, and Bill Kuharich was given a far bigger role.

But they weren't, not at all.

Page, Pollard, Hali and Bowe are all NFL starters. And he was drafting middle/back in those 2 drafts.

To get 4 bona-fide NFL starters in 2 drafts is, at worst, average. It's pretty acceptable when you're working at the back 1/2 of the draft, in fact. And Croyle is damn talented. While it hasn't worked out aces, that pick was a good one as well.

Tank Tyler in the 3rd is a decent pick, he's a solid under-tackle in a 4-3 and came with the 82nd pick, that's pretty decent.

And Herb Taylor is a guy that should be starting but isn't because our HC is a moron.

Add in his 3rd draft and it's unmistakeable -- Herm Edwards put together 3 consecutive drafts ranging anywhere from solid to spectacular.

The man couldn't coach a championship team in NFL Europe, but give credit where it's due. He was a very good drafter.

You will get burned by this, but your statement is correct.

If Cassel makes mental strides in all areas of his game and Jackson becomes one of the best 3-4 ends that gets 5-7 sacks per year like Ty Warren and becomes an elite run defender, it looks a lot better than it does right now...you know, when both players are ranked in the bottom 10% at their respective positions in their first year in red n gold.

It shouldn't even get that far -- trading down is MFing stupid by any barometer.

If you think Matt Cassel is a viable NFL QB, then your pick is a simple one -- Eric Berry. Cassel/Clausen is completely immaterial when discussing a trade down into the ****ing teens.

The Chiefs draft is stunningly easy.

And dumb **** coattail rider is still going to screw it up.

I hate that fat piece of shit.
Well, thats a completely normal reaction...

Herb Taylor isn't starting for the Chiefs because he plays for the Giants and their head coach is stupid as well.

Becht was the only player of the three to disappoint.
Just like last season when we wanted a mid-first guy but were sitting at #3 overall....

Oh wait - we did nothing and drafted a horrible player really high and paid him a shit-load of money instead.

Sorry, but Pioli just isn't that good.

I love it. So Jackson after just on year is a horrible player yet Pollard after three medicore seasons and one solid year is good.

It just ****ing amazes me that this many fans believe that trading down every year is the best way to go about things.

Teams that trade down are generally the teams that have a lot of top end talent (Eagles, Patriots). The Chiefs can't afford not to get a serious playmaker out of THIS draft.
Overall you make a good point but frankly, no matter what anyone says or how it ended up, trading down and getting LJ worked out pretty well for us. Obviously we weren't going to take Polamalu anyway, so I can't knock the pick of a coaches kid who rushed for 2,000 yards his last year in college, fell to us at the 27th pick and ended up rushing for over 1700 yards and 2 pro bowls.

Then the next year when Carl thought he had it all figured out and we traded down and ended up with the giant turd that was Junior Siavii.

Tyler was a 3rd round pick, Turk was the 2nd. To be fair, Tyler was rated as a 2nd rounder by most though.
