So I've been banned from CP for what appears to be forever. I'd like to offer the following explanation and a plea for reconsideration:

Here's what happened: the absurdity of the whole Peyton Manning situation showed me how fun it is to post in an absurd style that involves a lot of simple repetition, Dadaist nonsense, obviousness, exaggeration, and thread starters/bumps that are a bit offbeat. So for the last few months, I've primarily posted in that style. And while I think a lot of people agreed that this was fun and harmless, mods interpreted it as antagonistic and obnoxious (fair enough on the obnoxious thing, I suppose) and as a behavior issue rather than a stylistic choice.

Anywho, I really don't want to be banned forever and I'm willing to tone down that style if that's what it takes. I had previously seen my bannings as the mods who didn't think my weirdo shit was funny just ****ing with me. Now I see that they genuinely thought I was a problem and genuinely felt I was blowing chances and "making them look stupid" for letting me back in.

So now I'd like to drop the absurdist facade and be serious for a second: I want to keep posting at CP. And I'm willing to do it in a way that totally doesn't piss off the people who are trying to keep the place civil.

If anybody could pass this on to ChiefsPlanet, I would really truly appreciate it. Thanks.

Nope. The traffic comes from whomever is hosting the image itself. That is why every now and then someone will post and image and it will turn into something that chastises the image linker for "stealing bandwidth".

Had I uploaded the image to the board and the board's server was hosting it, then it has to call up that image every time someone hits that thread. IF the image is linked from another host, the other host is putting that image within that space.

If I host an image from imgur.com, it is their server that is providing the image in my post. For example, I will post an image below and I want you to right click and check out the URL where the image is.



You should see that it is being delivered from http://i.imgur.com/gfh0f.jpg, which means that CP does not have to use any of it's own bandwidth to provide the image. imgur is doing all the work.

Neat, thanks. But if someone actually uploads an image in a post as opposed to doing the "Insert URL" thing, that does increase traffic for CP, right?

Correct, because the image is being hosted by CP's servers and it has to call up that image every single time.

I agree that CP doesn't pay for bandwidth on an image hosted elsewhere but people do attach images here as well and "somebody somewhere" is paying for the bandwidth required to deliver images. I agree that you've poked holes in my bandwidth argument but disagree that the argument is completely invalidated. That's the best you're going to do from me. I stand by everything I've said on the subject. Posting 20 max-sized images back to back might fly a couple times but if it becomes a habit, as it did for Thig, you're going to get called on it eventually.

Thanks again. On a separate note, I made an IT/personal faux pas last week. And went to the local Best Buy to pick up a new TV and saw these two guys wearing short-sleeved white shirts geeking out about something while I was waiting. I asked, very innocently, "Let me guess: you guys are the Geek Squad, right?" They looked at me kind of sadly and one of them said, "No! We ARE not!" and walked away. I felt silly.

Pokes holes??? Dude, that argument has listed and is mostly under water.

You realize that hosting sites like imgur WANT people to use their hosting... otherwise why do they provide the service at all? Yes, somebody somewhere is paying for it... and doing it willingly. Why do you care what they pay in hosting and bandwidth? Yes, while people host images here... they are not going to go through the hassle of uploading the same ****ing image 20 times when they can upload it once to an image host and just use the same link 20 times. You are grasping at straws so you can still be "right".

This is you putting your fingers in your ears and saying LA-LA-LA-LA-LA over again until the other person just walks away frustrated simply because you cannot admit your ignorance on the topic.

There's not even a justifiable reason to be able to post 20 images in one post. I don't see a need for anything greater than 5 images per post, and that's being generous.

Eh, it's rare, but there are a handful of quality posts that are very image heavy. Seems like Rain Many has posted a couple that fit that description, and my guess is that a GIF'd up thread breaks the 5-image boundary pretty regularly. Not that people couldn't get around it by just doing multiple posts.
