Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

And then you’re going to turn around, take those picks and use more of ours to trade up to take a guy who may or may not turn out to be better than OBJ….all so you can sign JuJu. Jesus ****ing Christ.
Amazing isn't it? Good lord Madden really does rot brains.

Swap firsts, Give away your 3rd and next years 1st and you get in the top 15 no problem. We will pick in the low 20s at best next season so no real problem. You still have 2 seconds this year as well, assuming you get a second for OBJ.

Its about other players as well not just JuJu. Bolton, Sneed who I assume we all want to resign.

This is all about what OBJ wants anyway. I agree there is a point where Veach would sign him - there is also a point where he wont. And each eventuality has to be covered.

Yeah, I can't see any GM being stupid enough to give up high picks for the right to pay Brown a market setting deal.

This is a horrible idea for anything but a franchise QB. What LT in the draft this year is worth giving up that much for?

You underestimate the incompetence of some of these GMs. It just takes one.

theres a couple of tackles routinely mocked in the top 15 - Paris Johnson, Broderick Jones.

Although I havent done that much research on either.

Well, there are rational arguments to be made here on both sides.

I think OBJ played well down the stretch, and that was heartening to see. He also had stretches where he was pretty bad. I don't think anyone could really argue that isn't true. I think that, to me, that averages out to a decent, mid-level starting LT. I'm not seeing much UPSIDE at this point, I think it's pretty set that this is who Brown is.

If he wanted a square deal, on par with what he's put on tape, I would totally be in favor of that.

Last offseason says otherwise. He wanted not only a record setting deal, but every cent guaranteed over the life of the contract. I just think that's absurd. Hill didn't even want that, was ACTUALLY elite and not just wanting to be paid as such, and we hit a line in the sand and wouldn't cross it.

We can live with average LT play, we just can't OVERPAY for it. I think there would be possible trade targets that could provide decent LT play, like Dillard, or Nijman and cost much less.

And there's the draft. Or some combination of both, most likely.

So the one thing that I reject out of hand in all of this is that it's Brown or dogshit.

Yep. Figuring he's gone unless he fires that agent and gets with someone that actually understands what's going on

We are not trading into the top 15. JFC.

Of course it's not Brown or dogshit. But even you have to admit that there's a very real possibility Brown walks and we end up with nothing to replace him. Even trading into the top half of the first round doesn't guarantee anything.
