Do we want DeHop?

Story by Andrew Gould

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

They just won it all with a one-legged Mahomes, no above average WRs, weak tackle play, and an average-at-best defense. They finished the AFCC down 4 of their top 5 WRs and still beat an excellent team. The supporting cast does not have to be incredible.

Everyone was worried about life after Tyreek Hill. First game without him was one of the most dominant and efficient offensive performances ever. They finished the season with a more efficient offense than the previous year.

Life without Kelce will be fine too. Veach isn’t going anywhere. He’s still going to be killing it in the draft long after Kelce retires. Ownership isn’t going anywhere. Reid, I suspect, will coach until he’s physically incapable. And when he steps down, a like-minded disciple will step in.

Another important thing to consider is that Mahomes is still learning and probably hasn’t even reached his prime yet.

And even IF the offense fell off a bit, the defense might rise up to compensate. They definitely appear to be building a pretty special defense.
Absolutely.

Nobody's saying it wouldn't be great to have a stud WR, some of us are just saying it's lousy value to pay market price for one and that it's better to draft and develop one or several.

Kelce's still Kelce, and there's no reason to expect him to fall off a cliff. His style of play could have him playing more like Gonzales when he slows down, but that's still effective. So the team has invested in a first round WR via trade, and spent two twos in a twelve month span. That's significant investment in the WR room. If ONE of the three pans out, we'll be okay. If TWO pan out, we're golden. If all THREE pan out, we're going to wreck souls, with or without Kelce. I'd bet on Veach to hit on at least 30% of anything, wouldn't you?

And the big push to improve the defense is really something people are discounting. It's younger, faster, better at every level than the SB54 winning team. It finished middle of the pack with 6 rookies in the top 12 players. They were better by the SB and should continue to improve, plus the investment in Omenihu and Felix (and possibly Thompson, who's a skillset they've been lacking). I think this could be a top 5 defense without having to squint too hard.

Every year is a potential SB year, and the window stays wide open as long as we have Mahomes. Patrick plus best 52 is a great concept to compete EVERY year.

We're going to be fine.

Kelce could play for a while. But it's an inevitability that age will catch up to him sometime. Maybe not all at once but gradual. It doesn't help that without WR help we continue to demand heavy usage from him. We need WRs to step up so we can demand less from him and also because with every regression, the WR room needs to get that much better. We are also making a big assumption that Reid is here 5 years from now. I hope these guys are here forever but it's just a reality check.

The point isn't that we have to go all buffalo bills and desperately throw money at guys for a run before the window closes.
I can understand trying to strike while Kelce and Reid are still in the fold. We had the #1 offense in the NFL last year, and, on paper, we should be better this year. Especially at receiver.

The idea that we arent pumping reaources into the receiving core is crazy.

1.) Kelce is the greatest receiving TE ever.
2.) Toney is a 1st round pick and freaking electric player.
3.) Aaron Rodgers was winning MVPs and 13 games with MVS as his #2 receiver. I anticipate he and Mahomes getting more on the same page this year especially throws down the field.
4.) Moore and Rice are both 2nd rounders full of potential.

I get the argument that we don’t have a proven number one but there is a lot of talent and a bunch of players could take the step up. Even if many of the receivers from last season don’t take huge steps you’re still left with:

Kelce - 1200 yards
James - 600 yards
MVS - 700 yards
Watson - 300 yards
Running Backs - 800 yards

You’ve got 3600 yards before you get to any improvements Toney, Rice, or Moore make. If just one of the three can manage 1,000 yards you’re right back to 5,000+ and a top 3 offense at the worst.

The argument that you need Juju or Dhop or another true number one to make this offense fly gets undercut by Kelce who we all know is the real engine that makes it all work.

But the word we keep hearing is "we don't need" and "fine." And both are true. We will be more than fine and we can win a super bowl without a WR1. Do we technically need them? No. Would we better with one? Of course. But thats not what everyone believes. Some have made the case that we are worse off with a WR1 including the overplayed narrative that Tyreek is proof of that.

You don't need a WR1 to make the offense fly. But it makes a great offense even more formidable. And it Kelce is the engine then that raises the urgency. If we lose Kelce for even one game, I think we find out real fast how much we need a strong WR room. But not everybody feels that way.

But People are saying that. That a great WR1 would god forbid vulture targets from skyy moore. Or that Tyreek was poison to the offense. That great WRs are going to turn mahomes into this tunnel vision QB or a Brett favre gunslinger. This is the kind of stuff people have said to justify our shortcomings in the WR room. Our offense last year has led to a wild devaluation of a key skill position.

We've invested a lot of picks in the WR room out of necessity. We had to replace FIVE WRs in one season. We lost our WR1 and mecole this year. And even before that, people were content when we finished day 1 of the draft without a WR. They were content walking into this offseason with James being our only splash at the position.

So theres a lot of revisionist history here. Many of these "we don't need a wr" crowd do not feel the position is very important. They were just as fine doing nothing this offseason.

Nobody has argued against spending big money on a WR more than me. That's not the same thing as saying it's not an important position. We have the luxury of not needing a star WR, just good ones with star potential, and we have 3 young WRs to develop. They need to play to develop. Established veterans would rightly take snaps first. This slows the process, so no, I don't think it's good value OR good team building when we're paying our elite QB. I think it's smart to draft and develop WRs instead of paying market price. At least one of these guys is going to pan out, and I'd just about bet the house on two of them. If all 3 become above average starter level, we'll be unstoppable, damned near.

Since we have an elite QB, it makes more sense to me to spend your resources on WRs your QB clicks with. Usually elite talent fits that, but not always.

If the rumors are true, and Mahomes was all in on Rice after working out with him, then I think you have to defer to the Veach/Reid/Mahomes brain trust.

It is when you argue that a WR1 would make mahomes get tunnel vision. That they're ballhogs. That it takes away from the offenses efficiency. There are plenty who believe a WR1 is regressive. So even if an elite WR1 was handed to us on a silver platter we wouldn't want it.

DBs got too expensive, they found away around it. Now it's a overpriced WRs market, thanks Jags. Need to try another angle for now
