Chiefs Are 'Badly' Trying To Trade Down To Middle Of First*Round

Last year about this time, Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post first reported that the Chiefs were "in love" with LSU DE Tyson Jackson. A few days later and Jackson was the Chiefs pick in the draft.

Now Lombardi reports that the Chiefs are trying like hell to move down in the draft.

"The Chiefs are trying, and I mean really trying, to move down," Lombardi reports. "My sources tell me they'll be willing to go down as far as 15 for the right deal because they feel they can find a player in that range."

It's a fine line between trading down and trading down too far. According to Lombardi, our theory of the Eagles offering up the 24th and 37th picks for the Chiefs fifth pick doesn't look like it's happening. By staying around 15, they can still have a shot at a game changer -- Alabama LB Rolando McClain and Texas S Earl Thomas come to mind here -- as well as picking up extra selections.

That said, who's the Chiefs trading partner? SB Nation's Mocking The Draft takes an excellent look at this situation and comes to the conclusion that San Francisco might be the only team in that area that has a chance of moving up.

Lombardi reports the Chiefs are hoping someone wants to get in line to pick Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen.

DJ has nothing to do with Herm, that was a Vermiel pick. Turk sucked, I never disputed that. Tank doesn't. He's not a superstar, but he is a rotation-level player. There's value in that.

You're creating a false dichotomy with Herm much like you've done with Tyler.

It's not 'genius' or 'dunce' - there's a lot of room in between. Herm's draft, when compared to his peers (or Scott Pioli, for that matter), fall decidedly in the middle.

Though ultimately your argument that Pollard had a 'shit' attitude colors your entire argument. There was no indication, absolutely none at all, that Pollard was ever a bad guy in the lockerroom or on the field. He was a football rat that loved to hit guys. He had a coach that told him to go out there and decapitate guys.

Then he got frustrated in Mini-camp and the Chiefs used that as their excuse to cut him.

1 incident when he got pissed at a coordinator because he was frustrated while learning a completely new coverage package means he has a 'shit attitude'?

Just because that's what Scotty and his boys told you, that doesn't make it so. Pollard had a great attitude during his time in KC.

Look Pollard sucked ass before he got cut. Bottom line. I said average with a bad attitude. Like I said if he tore it up for the Texans why did they offer him a 1 year contract? Because they have their doubts as well.

And yes DJ was a Vermiel pick. Hali was a Herm pick and I like Hali but he isn't yet an impact player. I will say he shows potential but he cant carry a defense or probably never will so, not an "impact" 1st rounder.

I think Herm was marginally better than Vermiel overall so it looks better.

I do think we need to see something this year out of Pioli.

Two playmakers in Charles and Flowers (and yes, Flowers is a playmaker). A solid starter so far in Brandon Carr. Two players who played well in the backstretch of last year in Cottam and Mike Cox. A Left Tackle I believe has strong upside in Branden Albert. A solid at least #2 WR in Dwayne Bowe. A solid but unspectacular DE in Tamba Hali. In Dorsey, you have a guy who played decent at 3-4 DE and probably would have played a lot better at this natural position last year at DT. And even in terms of quality depth, Tank and Turk, Page, Pollard are very solid rotational guys.

This is a team that was built exclusively on 3 drafts. Few players from the Vermeil era were good enough to be on the Herm roster. And Carl was too cheap to bring in elite, long-term free agent options. Considering that Herm had almost nothing to work with, that list above is pretty solid.

2007 was easily his worst.

McBride was probably the worst pick of his tenure. Medlock over Crosby was also beyond awful.

Ultimately I suppose that I'm giving them perhaps more credit than I should for Bowe, Tyler and Taylor. I think Bowe's being screwed with and Tyler/Taylor were coached and/or utilized right out of being viable, long-term NFL players.

I suppose I can see 'below average' but that draft will outproduce the 2009 draft and the 2009 draft came from #3 in the draft. As important as that is in the first round, it's perhaps more important in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds.

If I see last season as an F draft (and I do), then when considering the relative positions in the drafts, I see the 2007 draft as no worse than a D+ (And apparently they give a lot fewer D+ than D-; it's not a grade they like to give out...)
