I think you've missed some of the backstory.

It started with two hippies making ice cream.

Colbert got a B&J flavor 'Americone Dream' a while back.
More recently Fallon got a flavor too, Late Night Snack, that tastes a lot like Colbert's. [Colbert's has choc, caramel and waffle cone. Fallon's has choc, caramel and potato chips].

They pretended to beef, Fallon came on Colbert's show and they shared each other's flavors on air.

Colbert declared them best friends for 6 months.

Then, Colbert auctioned off a portrait of himself for charity to the tune of $26,000. In announcing the sale on his show, he also stated that his BFfSM Fallon would match the donation $4$, which Fallon had never offered, Colbert offered it on his behalf.

They beefed some more, came to a detente, then Fallon tasked his audience to come up with the matching funds, and [tit4tat] said if they met the goal Colbert promised to sing the Friday song live on air.

That's roughly how we got there on the Fallon show last night.
Nice to know.

Now I'm clued up.

That said, I think the Colbert deserves a late night desk more than Fallon or most others out there.

His wit and humor are clearly equal that of over-the-hill Dave and a very stale Conan...

Meant to post this initially, but my only gripe is that they didn't go ahead and get Sudekis to hold the QR code, instead of someone imitating his What's Up With That dancin' fool.

If only there were someone on the Jimmy Fallon show with any pull at SNL.

FTR, Fallon's audience doubled Colbert's $26K, then NBC Universal hocked up another $26K, for $78K from Fallon to go with Colbert's $26K for donorschoose.org.

I'm not a Fallon fan.

I admit that.

Just saying that I think Colbert's humor and ability to play with the guest is a much better late night fit.

Just me......

Colbert's probably happier doing what he is now than he would be fitting into 'lat night rules for audience garnering'

Besides, the dude once played Hardwick. [not really a point, except the clip is cool, bonus: who can spot the unknown who's now quite known].

No, he was a cast member on a prime time show, albeit one that lasted nearly never. That's from the Dana Carvey Show in case you can't tell. Carvey, Chappelle, CK, Smigel, 'Starburns' Stamatopuolos, Carrell, Colbert, et al.

This was a truly unknown, at the time. Hint red blouse, hamming it up.
