Grade Pre-season Game #1

I am going to say C+.

The 1's looked good and get an A+ for the little time they played.

The 2's were so-so. Daniel was not good. Agnew??? Yeah, you drug it all down. #48, McDougald(?) was hitting and liked what I saw there. Jalil Brown...gots to go

The 3's weren't much better namely because of Agnew. Bray showed his arm a little but not much protection and had a sure TD dropped.

Special Teams had some good returns and we look improved there.

What impressed me the most about Smith was he was able to do what little we asked of Cassel that Cassel could not do. When he hit guys it was in stride. Hitting JC in stride out of the backfield is going to be deadly this season.

Some people, Clayton, were disappointed with the lack of downfield passing but some need to remember, Clayton, that the WC Offense, which I keep hearing we will run, is a YAC offense.

We will see next week if we take that step forward or like last year, start going backwards

I don't care about last season. I was only noting the fact that you cannot tell everything about the progressions a QB goes through by just watching what they do post-snap.

For anyone that has seen Smith's body of work the past 2.5 seasons they know he is VERY good at reading defenses and making adjustments, both pre and post snap. In Reid's offense that will prove very effective.

Cassel did same thing in the past here, and was "effective" in 2010 too. You're grasping for anything here that seems positive, but it's business as usual.

I think each one of us would have been okay if we had a 2010 Cassel in 11 and 12. The problem was that they didn't play to his strengths. They asked him to do things he couldn't do. He's an awful QB. Smith is not an awful QB. He's not amazing. He's not a top 5 guy. He might not even be a top 10 guy. But he's a sight better than Cassel could ever hope to be.

I give it an A, since I came to the conclusion that Alex Smith is not Matt Cassel. He only played one series, but I was impressed with his composure, pocket presence, ability to hit tight throws and leadership.

I need to see a LOT more, to be convinced that the trade was worth the price, but so far, I am impressed.

I haven't watched the game yet, but it seems that Alex played a lot like Matt Cassel incthe first half of the Atlanta game last year.

I'm not saying that as a negative, either. Cassel played well in that first half.
