Back Surgery

Anyone had any experience with having multiple discs removed?

The reason I ask is tomorrow morning I'm going to have two more (had L5-S1 removed and fused already) removed. I'll end up with L3-L4-L5-S1 all fused together.
I haven't ran across anyone IRL who has had this done so I figured I'd of course come to the fountain of all knowledge and ask.
Just wondering how well it worked out, how much pain relief, effect on day to day life, etc.

I my wife’s experience, back surgery has a 33% chance of improvement, 33% Vance if staying the same and33% chance of getting worse , it is a a crap shoot unfortunately hence why they only do it when it gets really bad.

Jeez stump. That sounds horrible. Best of luck.

I don’t have much experience here. I’ll be thinking of you.

I also don’t have much of any experience with opioids, but good luck. I’d definitely try whatever alternative meds you care to try. I don’t know what works and what doesn’t but it’s all worth a shot if you’re concerned about the opioids.

Damn, not really much incentive to try surgery.

Mines to the point where I don't have much choice anymore.

This year she's had both carpal tunnels done and luckily those aren't hurting as much anymore.

Fusions are fine, but they cause your discs above and below to deteriorate.

Disc replacements > fusions.

It does. I feel for her. I wouldn't even go back for another injection. The ones they use to block the nerve feel like a piece of red hot rebar plugged into 110 volts being rammed inside of and down the length of your leg.

I had C6-C7 disc replaced and fused last year. I had been in severe nerve pain (radiculopathy) all down my left arm. Collar for 8 weeks after the surgery. I was back to running at 11 weeks post surgery and now back to running and the gym. I can’t say yet that it was a bad decision because the pain is gone with only some lingering numbness in a couple finger tips. Good luck with your procedure. Hope you find the same relief I did.

I'm with you had low lumbar disk fusion like 10 years ago was in so much pain for 8 months before my family doctor decided to send me to a surgeon. 8 ****ing months i couldn't stand up strait or do shit so much pain then the doc was like I looked at the Xrays we took 8 months ago and there you have a vertebrae pinching a nerve going send you to Wichita Surgical. Well **** my life. The surgeon took one look at me and said I'm going do surgery he looked at my Xray and said if i did one wrong move I could have severed the nerve and I'd be paralyzed. Good God. So he did surgery and I still have pain but so much better that I was and thankful i had the surgery because I could stand up right.

God speed . You will be fine surgeries today they know what they are doing so don't fret.

Yeah, she says the shots are awful. The nerve ablation was apparently worse, she only had that done once.

Same thing with me. I need C5-C6-C7 replaced/fused. Pain down my left arm, numbness, tingling, drop things way too often. I'm going to see how this one goes and not get in a hurry to get my neck done. At this point I can deal with that pain.

Yea, LOL, I cut loose with more than a few cuss words when I got one. Had to apologize on my way out.

Not just cuss words, I directed them right at that sadistic bastard that does it for a living.

Sorry to hear Stump.

It's a crapshoot on it relieving pain for the people we see in rehab. I have seen patients swear by the changes in pain after spine fusions and others who say it made it worse. It's an avoid surgery at all cost approach in my opinion, but if you're already in significant pain I understand wanting to try something.

Hope it works.
