Like almost everything, there is no "one" factor that led to Nebraska's fall. It was a confluence of a lot of different factors.

As someone mentioned, the B12 eliminating Prop 48 really hurt Nebraska's recruiting.

I know that the state of Nebraska put out a lot of talented players in the 70's-90's but that was partially due to the smash mouth style of football that offenses and defenses played during that time. Their demographics aligned better with that era. Now the name of the game is speed, and the state of Nebraska doesn't have enough of that to live on in-state recruiting alone. I think they recruited Florida and California a lot heavier when they were in the Big 8, but eventually started recruiting more to Texas due to the B12 affiliation. That was probably a mistake, as every team in that league was also trying to recruit Texas, in addition to LSU, Arkansas and a lot of the SEC West.

I think another factor, is that kids used to leave their home state more, because a team like Nebraska would be featured on nationally televised games, virtually every week.

In the 80's/90's, that would be a big deal for a kid from Mississippi (or wherever), versus say staying home and playing at Ole Miss that may be on two nationally televised games each year back then. Now basically ALL games are televised nationally, so players from the South/Cali/Texas are choosing 2nd tier local teams over teams like Nebraska.

I think switching to the B1G hurt them as well. Just like how the Big 8/B12 was experiencing a very excellent run during the 80's and especially 90's, the B1G became very good around the early 2000's when Ohio State really emerged. Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan State and Iowa all were pretty strong then too.

They've had a lot of bad coaching hires since Osborne. The best one was probably Solich, and they let him go right away because he was "only" winning 9 or 10 games a year.

They really need to get their next hire right. They need to find someone that can either recruit QB's extremely well.

Would Pelini come back?
Would Neb want him and his issues back?

I doubt it on both counts

Good list of reasons.

I’d make it simpler tho: what does Corn offer a recruit that he cannot get playing in The South? I can’t think of any benefit these days.

We did have an Athletic Director try to weasel his way out of the game with OU and was actively
looking for a replacement to OU without anyone's knowledge. When the story broke, it took Bill 8 hours to come clean and rumor has it, that this is what led to todays retire or be fired

If Nebraska wants to go the Shawn Eichorst route and hire another failing AD from Miami, by all means please take Blake James.

My interest in the team has decreased. I still follow the drama off the field because that's the best part. But I don't watch the games anymore. I want to have fun on Saturday, and Husker football is no longer fun.

Several posters have covered the reasons for the team's downfall. My last trips to Lincoln were about the beer and food. The game was secondary.

Good list. In bullet form (with a few additions)
1) Scholarship limits (I think this is the REALLY big one. Teams used to be able to stockpile talent and there was no expectation of freshman/sophomore playing time. You waited your turn).
2) Partial qualifier rules changing (a lot of BIg 8 schools put themselves at a natural disadvantage by not taking partials while Nebraska and OU and Colorado did)
3) TV exposure expanded greatly. Going to more than 2 time slots a week per conference on TV evened the playing field for a lot of programs
4) Stylistic evolution of gameplay. When you could win playing smashmouth option football and smart, physical, run-D first defense, it was easier for Nebraska to develop those players (through an excellent S&C program that also probably bent the rules).
5) No all-time great coaches. Osborne and Devaney are two of the top 10 or so college football coaches of all time. They just happened to be back-to-back, creating a little bit of an illusory effect that it was ALL the program. It's the coach, too.

I believe he left Youngstown with some violations and lasted a year as DC at LSU. Kinda rubbed the fan base and boosters the wrong way when that tape leaked of him calling them out.

There's something to the theory. It was one more factor, in addition to several, that made it harder for Nebraska football to succeed.

I think Missouri and kansas and Iowa and Iowa State and even Minnesota and the NDSU program all have kept a little talent away from Nebraska that otherwise would have matriculated there in past eras.

Guys like Martin Rucker, Jeremy Maclin, Aldon Smith Justin Britt, Tim Barnes, William Moore used to go to Nebraska and be happy to sit for a few years before getting their time in the sun.

Iowa landed several top players from Missouri during Pinkel's tenure. Just not true at all.
