I argued with my Doc today

I went in for a quick check of my blood pressure today and once again it was high (142/94) while I was there. Well, this time I took in my BP monitor that I use according to how blood pressure is supposed to be taken. I showed him the results I had taken for the last couple of weeks and he wasn't impressed. I told him, "How is it that BP is supposed to be taken in the morning and while relaxed for 30 minutes and I get normal readings, yet when I rush around to get here for a check it's always high?" I think there's something wrong here. How many people are taking BP medication because their Doc took a few readings that showed it was high without considering the conditions under which the reading was taken. Anyone else concerned about this sort of thing?

Get a new doctor. I'll call mine at 8am, be in at 9:30am, be out by 10am.

You can get an appointment a mere hour in advance?
It sounds like you have a Dr. that nobody else is going to.
That might be a problem in and of itself.

The human factor............................

the nurses take dozens of BP readings in a day. They get very complacent. A doctor will usually be consistent, but may not be correct. After being hooked up to a moniter for two stints in the hospital this year I trust the public machine moniters at the grocery store and the ER lobby. Learn how to take BP and get your own equipment. Take several readings in a day. Then compare.

Yes, a mere hour. Loads of people go to him. He justs runs a very efficient office. Working in the Health industry kinda gets you a leg up on who is good and who isn't.

He is definately not a quack. He was the Via Christi Regional Medical Center medical staff President in 2001. Former board member of Sedgwick County American Medical Association.

A lot of places do that, actually. They leave a few appointments open for emergencies, and there are also usually cancellations. The best time to call my doctor, if I'm not making an appointment weeks in advance, is at 8AM the day I want to go in.

That is very true, the nurse of the doctor I go to always gets a higher reading than the doctor does......

BTW, how is your bottom number so high? My top number is usually pretty high but my bottom number is really really low. Usually I am about 130/49 with a pulse of about 47. What does this mean should I be concerned with such a large difference in between the two #'s?

My blood pressure always used to run 130s/85-90 - even in my 20s. I was starting to run 140/90ish but wasnt' too worried about it since I had always been a little higher than normal. Then, in the course of a day I started feeling really bad - severe headache, heart felt like it was bouncing off my stearnum, lightheadedness and so on. The wife took my BP and it was 180/110. I hit 200/120 at one point in the days waiting to get into the doctor (I was taking it extremely easy and avoiding all stress). Doc put me on Diovan, got my BP down to 120/70 and I physically feel better than I have in a long time. I don't have problems with any of the side effects people normally talk about with BP meds. The only thing I've noticed is my feet tend to be colder and I want socks now.

If you have been boarderline, get yourself a home BP monitoring kit. Take your blood pressure every couple of hours and write it down. Then, when you go back to the Dr, take the record of your readings in with you and give them to him. If he prescribes something, give it a try. Even at boarderline, you may feel fine but over time it can be hard on your system opening up your chances for heart attacks and stroke.

Good luck with it!

What he said. I worked in the medical field for over 10 years and it was a common occurance. People hate to go to the Dr. They get nervous. Your readings are high and your Dr. gets nervous and wham your on meds. He has to. What would you expect? You go into the Dr with consistently high BP and he does nothing?

Yeah. Just as an FYI the nurses at the blood bank don't find it amusing.

Not sure if it's been said.... but I doubt your Doc is very worried about your BP when you're at home sitting on the couch for 30 minutes. You're more at risk when you are out running around hurrying here and there, when your BP is naturally higher from everyday stress. Just cause your numbers are much lower when you're relaxed at home doesn't mean you don't need the medication for when you're away from home in a more stressful environment.

The first issue is you THINK your Doctor cares?
He covered his butt from a malpractice case by prescribing you medicine...

he did his job.

Take medicine or not isn't his concern. NOW.
