ENGLEWOOD – Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith didn’t participate in any of the team’s offseason minicamp practices and said he doesn’t know whether his injured hip will allow him to be ready for the start of training camp.

The Broncos finished their final minicamp today. Training camp is set to begin July 29. Smith, who had arthroscopic hip surgery shortly after last season, said he has been extra cautious with his recovery. He said he’ll continue to play it safe because he doesn’t want to set himself back, even if that means missing some of training camp.

“I hope to, but if I don’t, I don’t think it’s the end of the world,” Smith said about being ready for the start of training camp. “Football season starts in September, and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

Smith said he felt some inflammation in the hip this week. He stood with the rest of the receivers during Tuesday’s practice wearing a gray sweat suit.

Smith, 37, said he hasn’t considered retiring.

“If I think that, then I’ll quit,” Smith said.

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said there was no timetable on Smith’s return, but he would continue to work out the next three weeks, and the team would re-evaluate his status before training camp.

“We don’t want to push him too hard and set him back,” Shanahan said.

Certainly he has at his age, but he has nice value as a #3 option which would be the goal as long as Marshall can rid himself of nagging injuries.

The general standard for HOF recognition is to have been recognized as one of your positions' elite players for an extended amount of time.

Rod Smith has had a great career with exceptional longevity, but he falls far short of this mark. He never was considered elite, and only maybe a couple years in there would you have lumped him in with the best WRs in the league.

Well, you're certainly entitled to your opinion... but, this happens every year and the notion of what is considered "elite" is entirely open for debate regarding most players. There are really only a few "elite" players and if you were going to go down the list of those in Canton now, you could kick about 40% out based on the "elite" thing.

Is he Jerry Rice or Tim Brown? No. But, his credentials speak well of his accomplishments, longevity and his place in Canton. Debate it if you like, it's what we do... but, I think he's a worthy candidate for Canton.

Personally I think Rod Smith is a 1st ballot HOFer. I will NOT be sad when he hangs em up. He's not what he used to be, and probably will lose his starting gig to Marshall this year, but ya still gotta give him respect.

Hopefully, he can play 1 more year and leave on his own terms... and if he can come back and Marshall can't beat him out, then ... put him on the pile with the Nash's and Lelie's of the world.
