Three Runners die in Detroit marathon

Autopsies expected....

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ath_free_...marathon_death

DETROIT – Autopsies are expected after three half-marathoners died during the Detroit marathon.

Officials say 36-year-old Daniel Langdon collapsed at about 9:02 a.m. Sunday between the 11- and 12-mile markers and 65-year-old Rick Brown collapsed at 9:17 a.m., near where Langdon went down.

Officials say 26-year-old Jon Fenlon collapsed at about 9:18 a.m., just after finishing the 13.1-mile half-marathon in 1:53:37.

Autopsies are planned for Monday.

Rich Harshbarger, vice president of consumer marketing for the Detroit Media Partnership, told the Detroit Free Press emergency personnel were on the scene within seconds.

More than 19,000 people were registered to participate in the 32nd Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon.

Since this was in Detroit, I bet the coroner finds that the runners were sweating bullets when they died.

Congrats to the other 1/2 and full runners yesterday. I did the KC 1/2 as well and am proud to say I beat the guy even though I fell off the training wagon the last month. Pike's Peak 1/2 is next! I will be sure to send you my training program when I get started SNR!

As for the rest, pretty much spot on.. I can sprint, no shin splints.. If I ****ing jog one of those things shins are bothering me half a mile in..

Oh, hey. I'm pondering that one as well. Do you know when signups are? I just was talking to a serious runner today and he said that it generally fills up within a day of opening up registration.

So it doesn't fill up immediately? My guy today ran it in 2009 and he said it fills up in hours.

Let me know if you decide to do it. It's definitely on my list next year. I have a hard time imagining a more challenging half.

Oh I'm doing it for sure, it's the only reason I signed up for the KC half because you need proof of a prior 1/2 or full marathon to "qualify". I put that in quotes because a 2:30 half qualifies you for Pike's Peak 1/2.

I think the full marathon fills up much quicker though as there are a lot less spots for that. There are also some psychos who do a double: 1/2 on Sat and Full on Sunday.

Ah, okay. I'm definitely going to target the ascent for next year as long as I can keep running and getting into shape.

The guy I talked to today is really, really into running, and in fact just finished a 50-mile mountain race. Looking him up, it appears that he's in the 1:30 to 1:40 range on half-marathons and 3:15 or so in marathons. He did the Ascent in 3:15 and was in the top ten percent of male finishers.

I know a woman who did the ascent this year, too. She ran a flat half-marathon in 1:53 this summer in a race that we both ran, and her time in the Ascent was 4:49. She said it was not enjoyable.

I suspect that the ascent is as much about leg strength as it is endurance.

Yeah, the Ascent is a 1/2 marathon in distance only. Funny thing is, my mom has done it a few times and said it's more of a climb than a run. You are rarely moving at a running pace, but constantly moving and heading up. I've been told the best thing to do is run stadium stairs or just hop on the stair climber and go.

It's scary to even think about it, which makes me want to do it more. Hopefully I'll see you there, even if it's only as a distant speck above me.

Long distance running is the problem, not running. Sprinting is amazing for your body. lose fat and not muscle. That sounds good to me. If God were real, he wouldn't have let your mother create you. And you're lucky he's not.
