Final thoughts on preseason

This team just looks better. Just all around, even our suck is better than our suck in years past. You can tell we have a staff of coaches that know wtf they are doing. It's refreshing as we haven't seen that since the DV days when you get to it.

Obviously we haven't played a meaningful down yet and you can tell that there is room to improve but I think everyone is getting the sense that we are doing just that, improving. Worst to first? Most likely not but in this division it may not be unreachable.

Offense:
Running game looks rather weak but we were without JC against SF and went against the Steelers the next game. 2 very, very good defenses. So is our running game that bad or were we facing good defenses? Probably some of both.

Smith is going to be the proverbial game manager and if his preseason is any indication of what is to come that can suffice for now. His throws are accurate and receivers aren't jumping, reaching, diving, or sliding to catch passes ala Cassel. Don't turn it over, control the clock, rest the defense. That is a winnable recipe even if it is a boring one.

Tyler Bray......kid is going to be good in 2-3 years. If he pays attention to who he is learning from, we are going to have a bad ass QB.

Defense:
Its on! This defense is getting after it and though it may be a feast or famine defense, it's obvious that the days of Romeo's read-react defense is gone. This is attack, attack and attack some more. I think Poe and TJax are going to take big steps in the right direction this year.

Special Teams:
What can you say? They looked awesome all preseason long.

I see shades of Marty ball coming with a ball control offense, relentless defense and strong special teams. We just replace the power running with dinking and dunking in the passing game.

I liked some things and there are still areas of concern.

There is an improvement at qb from 1-3, but Daniel doesn't look like a leader of a 10-11 game team. Smith is exactly the game manager right now, but he's shown himself to be mobile. My biggest gripe with him would be he's been too cautious, but it was pre-season so we'll see. Charles should put up great numbers running and receiving in this offense. Bray has a really nice arm, but we'll see how his brain, work ethic, footwork and decision making improve. Hopefully we don't see him on the field until next August.

My biggest concern is the O-line, especially early in the season. I think they'll improve as the season goes on and its' fortunate that Jax is the first game to get their feet wet.

I"m thrilled with the special teams....great kicks, big returns, blocked kicks......huge improvement here which shows improvement in those spots 40-53 to me.

The defense is going to be more exciting and they're going to get burned on occasion. I'll take that.

I'd say you are wrong..seems I remember Flowers getting an arm in there and forcing it loose.

Dude, you're being intellectually dishonest.

The defense looked excellent. Defenses are going to give up points in the National Football League. That's a given. But to hold Pittsburgh's ones, in Pittsburgh, to 10 points, especially after the Andy Reid "Gimme" was impressive.

The Chiefs Two's beat Pittsburgh's Two's. For all of the Chase Daniel "hate", he beat Gradkowski, who's been a starter in this league. Again, impressive.

Special Teams have been extremely impressive. If this continues into the regular season, they'll be a factor in every game and might be the difference between winning and losing many games. A short field always helps the offense.

And finally, you can bitch and moan all you want about Alex Smith not throwing down the field, which is a given. But he was accurate, mistake-free and led the offense to touchdowns, at home and on the road, without the benefit of a strong running game or circus catches by his receivers.

I'm a slow starter to get on the bandwagon this year....it's been soooooooooo long since I've had good reason to give a fornication about this team.

Offensively, there was nothing to like, apart from one drive.

And in our ONLY test against a team's starting offense, the secondary was a dumpster fire.

Seeing that Alex can actually lead a TD drive was nice, though. So, 7-9, perhaps.

Alex Smith doesn't have to be Tom Brady.

If he can turn into Mobile Trent Green(2003) It'll be a shitload more enjoyable season that we've seen in a long time.
