The longest I ever drove nonstop was from Newport, RI to St. Louis. Left Newport about 10:30 on a Friday morning, arrived in St. Louis (actually Fenton) around 5:00 a.m. Saturday. I was alone and only stopped for gas. Factoring in the time zone change, that was 19 1/2 hours. It was brutal, but I was young. I'm sure I couldn't do it now.
Longest point to point drive was from St. Louis to Los Angeles, but I did that over three days. My cousin moved and I drove the rental truck while she drove her own car. Flew back. The first day and a half was awful until we got past Denver. After that, it was magnificent. |

When I was 17 we moved from San Diego to Annapolis. Dad and I drove from SD to Annapolis in our motorhome, towing our Maxima on a car trailer. Annapolis to SD in a rental car. Then SD to Annapolis in his old F250 towing our boat. Each way we stopped in St. Louis for a day or two to stay with his family.

Flying - from KC to Hawaii for my SIL's wedding
Driving - from KC to Williamsburg, VA for a wedding with an interesting overnight in WV. We then drove down for a day at Virginia Beach, took the Chesapeake Bay Bridge up and camped in Chincoteague, VA. Spent the day in Ocean City, MD while our car was repaired before camping in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Made our way up to Philly to spend some time with family before heading back to KC. Had to spend the night in Kingdom City, MO to get a replacement tire. |

1980 or so-As a kid with my grandparents pulling a camper.
Iowa-SD-Missoula and Bozeman MT, Yellowstone, Colorado, NE, Home. Gone for three weeks. I think I grew 2 inches. I-94 was not yet completed in Montana. As an adult-Minneapolis, Fargo to move the kid into college, Minneapolis, Lathrop MO for the eclipse, DSM, MPLS. Over 1000 miles in a few days. Road construction sucks.

The most in the shortest amount of time I’ve ever driven was the three day weekend I rented a car and drove from Dallas out to the Big Bend area of Texas. Probably spent more time in the rental car then hiking and sightseeing but I love that area and would definitely do it again.

I went to Italy 2 years ago. The flight was about 8-10 hours to get to Rome from Toronto.
I went for leisure and also to spend time w/ family.

As an adult Williamsport, PA to St Louis in one day, about 11 1/2 hours, 800 miles. It's a little longer than Williamsport to Chicago (9 hours, 600 miles) which which we did 2 years later. As a teenager we went from Williamsport to Leavenworth in one straight trip after my grandpa died. We left at 8 am and got to Leavenworth at 5 in the morning stopping for gas, to eat, and so my dad could close his eyes for about 2 hours. It's just over 1000 miles and if driven straight through nonstop 15 hours. As a kid we went from Leavenworth to Orlando and Leavenworth to the Grand Canyon different years on vacation. Similar distances, about 2400 miles 36 hours round trip, but those were done at a leisurely pace.

Driving
Probably San Diego to/from Quantico, Va. multiple times. Every possible route to and from for something different. Flying Single pilot aircraft formations. Probably Trans PAC to Australia. Authorized Amphetamines and “ piddle packs” and tanking in flight involved. Maybe some other legs to ME or to recover on a ship. Riding Aircraft non stop. Probably South Africa. Maybe Kandahar. Ships. Around the world. Through both the Panama and Suez canals on the same float. Basic rule: Every hour you’re asleep is another hour you’re not at sea. |

Drove from Lemoore California to Fort Collins Colorado in one shot.
Got out of the Navy, and was so jacked up to be out, I just kept driving. Butivel driving from KC to Lemoore or vice versa, 3 times. That’s a long ass drive.

TL;DR - KC to California to Oregon to South Dakota and back to KC. Visited Yosemite, San Fran, Crater Lake, Yellowstone, and Mount Rushmore as well as several tourist sites and sites of historical interest along the way.
———— In Missouri, they teach kids about the Oregon Trail in 4th grade. The summer after my youngest finished 4th grade we took our longest road trip partly along the path of the OT. We traveled across southern Nebraska and into Wyoming stopping at a Pony Express station and some OT-related historic sites. We left the OT somewhere in Wyoming to essentially follow the Mormon Trail down to Salt Lake City and then drove through the Nevada desert at night. We stayed in motels most nights along the way, but on Nevada desert night we ended up stopping for about 3 hours just before dawn so dad could get some sleep in the parked van before moving into Yosemite the next morning. From Yosemite, we drove on to San Francisco and stayed in the one fancy hotel of the trip but I was annoyed that they charged $12 for WiFi unlike all the cheap roadside motels where it was free. I don’t know how much we spent on that trip, but we didn’t spend that $12. We roughed it like it was 1995. We wanted to see Alcatraz while we were there but dad didn’t make reservations in advance so no dice. We spent a couple of days doing max tourist stuff like fisherman’s wharf and then headed north along the coast to Oregon. In Oregon we visited Crater Lake which was spectacular. From there we headed east to Yellowstone. Along the way we tried to squeeze in a tour of Idaho’s old state penitentiary museum but due to an unanticipated timezone change, we got there right at closing time. Strike two on prison tours.* We spent a little time at Yellowstone including some mild white water rafting during a pretty dry season. Yellowstone was marred by recent and ongoing forest fires so it wasn’t at max impressiveness, but it was still cool. From Yellowstone we took a northern path back to KC by way of Mount Rushmore, the Crazyhorse mountain carving, and the SD Badlands. It was our best family vacation and the kids were really engaged in the Oregon Trail history part of it. ————————- * I just got back from a road trip to the Pacific Northwest with my youngest daughter who is now 22 and just graduated from college. Along the way, we stopped at the Idaho penitentiary and finally got that prison tour. Third time’s the charm.
