I read a long article that looked at several different states where the tax take was considerably lower than expected. Basically, the states are taxing it too high.

The illegal drug networks already exist. Furthermore, with it being legal to buy, the cops and the DA don't have much incentive to go after drug dealers if they are only selling pot and no violence is involved. They definitely don't have an incentive to go after recreational buyers unless they are looking to bust them for some other reason.

So if they are unlikely to get busted and it is a lot cheaper, why not keep buying from the dealers. Sure, some will buy legal for quality control, or actually want to follow the law or have enough money to burn. Many, do not.

The drug dealers have had to lower their prices, but many of them are still in business. If the drug dealing network never existed, it would be one thing, but putting them out of business is another.

It is a hard political sell, but states need to price it cheaply enough to shut down the black market pot trade. Once that happens, they could then slowly raise taxes. A little bit of the black market would probably come back, but unlikely on the scale it is today.

Let me give you an example. That same 140k in fees you have to pay IL to even begin the process of owning one, is only $2500 in Oklahoma.

The black market will still thrive at those prices. The black market beats them on price just for flower alone by almost 25%. That .5ml cart shouldn't be more than 20-25 bucks. The grams of concentrate are just the same.

What for? Vapes and tastes fine. It's black because this jar of alcohol sat for three years and I just found it in the back of my cupboard a few days ago. If I planned to sell it or if it were butane I'd purge but really no reason to just for personal use.
