WNBA Announces Creation of Kobe and Gigi Bryant "My Dad the Rapist" Award
Nothing says #MeToo, standing up for a woman's rights, feminist power and all that other bullshit malarkey fake outrage than creating an award for a rapist and all that he did for women's basketball.

I wonder if their assholes hurt as much as the young lady who needed 13 stitches to close the gash in her ass after Kobe raped her.

The WNBA saved its biggest announcement for last on Friday as it hosted its draft live on ESPN.

Following the 36th and final pick, league Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced the creation of the Kobe and Gigi Bryant WNBA Advocacy Award:

"Kobe was an incredible champion of women's basketball, and Gianna shared his passion and dedication to our game," Engelbert said. "The Kobe and Gigi Bryant WNBA Advocacy Award will honor their legacy and reflect Kobe's commitment to mentoring the next generation of players, promoting the game and giving back to the community."

According to the WNBA's statement, the award will honor advocates and influencers who use their time, talent and platform to raise awareness for the game: "The [award will] include a charitable component that highlights Kobe's legacy as a coach and mentor and Gigi's inspirational, relentless commitment to playing at the highest levels of the game."

Engelbert said the award will be presented yearly during NBA All-Star Weekend, with Vanessa Bryant, Kobe's wife and Gianna's mother, playing a large role in picking a winner.

Bryant will be at All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis in 2021 to give out the award in person.

That’s a good question. There was no trial so we will never know. I’ve never heard about 13 stitches (which isn’t even on Wikipedia) but I did know she bled, although the amount of blood was not discussed. But evidence of vaginal trauma is present in about 50% of cases in both consensual and non-consensual sex.* The degree of trauma is not clear in this case.

The accuser made several contradictory statements about her behavior about that night and the next day. There were witnesses who were on record stating she was taking anti-psychotic medications. When she went to her rape exam, her underwear had sperm from another man. She had not showered but she said she changed her clothing. This evidence, though, means that the origin of the vaginal trauma is in doubt. Active sperm would only be present for maybe 24 hours, so whatever the source of the sperm, it was recent. Yes, sperm can be found up to 60 hours after a medical exam, but that is 60 hours inside a person, not outside a person. Big difference in environment. Certainly there were enough inconsistencies to make a conviction a dicey proposition.

Kobe apologized and said he thought it was consensual but apparently she didn’t. That is generally a defense to charges of rape, although some states may differ. Did he say this because it was true or as part of a settlement? Hard to say.

My guess from the evidence we do have? It started consensually. What I don’t know is: 1) did it end consensually? and 2) did Kobe think it ended consensually? The evidence is not clear for either of those questions. For me, Since there was no trial and the evidence is murky, I stick with innocent until proven guilty. It would not surprise me if it started consensually, it started to hurt, she wanted it to stop but he was close and in the heat of the moment, he discounted what she said so he could finish. Depending on how a jury viewed the totality of the evidence, that could justify either acquittal or conviction.

* I’m typing this from home. I have the forensic nursing articles on my work computer. I cite them when a government expert witness seeks to argue that evidence of vaginal trauma is evidence that the sex was non-consensual. I haven’t done a sex assault case in years, though. My practice is more in federal court so the sex cases I get are some type of trafficking or child sexual exploitation charges.

As you say, I’m more inclined to lean toward “not guilty” at first when it comes to rape allegations.
