Home Depot vs Lowe's.

I love the offseason!

Where does your loyalty stand between the two? Do you notice a difference for certain items? Do you mainly stick to shopping at one?

I wish Lowes was better, they're only one mile from house and HD is nine miles away. However, Home Depot has better prices, and if say you're a veteran and can show an ID they'll also give 10% off like Lowes. I bought a grill at Lowe's in the spring and I didn't get my 10%, it was $199. I asked why and they said it was on sale, although there were no signs it was sale price. Three days later they it on a sale in their flyer for $179, I went back and got my $20, and I asked about the other price and they said that was an unadvertised sale, even though I had seen the signs for $199 for months.

I did a lot of remodeling this past summer. I had to buy Moen grab bar for the shower, it was Eva model in chrome $39.90 at HD, and $60.78 at Lowes. I bought a new 3 bulb vanity mirror light in nickel finish. It was $53 at HD and $89 at Lowes. I bought a new stainless steel 33" single bowl sink with a pull down faucet at HD for $399, Lowes didn't offer a similar sink.

We ordered a range online around April. The delivery date was like 3 weeks away, but we waited for it. They screwed up the delivery (working through a third-party delivery company) about six times. One time I was waiting on hold for a manager, near closing time. They disconnected me, then wouldn't answer the phone after that. Lots of broken promises. Two emails sent to their corporate customer service contact with no response. None. One time the delivery truck shows up to my door, without the range and they were wanting to take away our old range. Seriously. It finally shows up about 3 weeks later. The range is all scratched up, is missing a foot, one of the anti-tip cement blocks is knocked off, just all beat to heck. I sent it back. Still took two weeks and multiple phone calls to get it taken off of my credit card. I hope they go bankrupt.

After I sent the scratched up range back, I ordered one from Home Depot and it was delivered 10 days later on the first attempt with no drama.
Lowes took care of me I ordered a hot water heater to be delivered. They said it would be 8 am delivered which was fine I could install and be done that day and head for out of town work the next day. Well at 8 am on the dot they arrived and the kid unloaded on a hand truck. I could clearly see on the box do not hand truck this side. When he wheeled it up to the garage I pointed to him the caution on it. We broke the box down sure as shit leaning it on that side against dolly crushed the gas control panel. I told him I simply have to have one today so we loaded it up he said he would pick up a replacement and be back in an hour to 2 hours. I tore out the old and put it to the curb and an hour and a half later had new. We unboxed to be sure and I had a new one installed a couple of hours later. That is above and beyond.

Ray the Menards guy was awesome. He was kind of like Dave Thomas on those Wendy's commercials.

RIP Ray

HD's website will tell exactly what aisle and bay the item is located in, that's a huge plus.

Home Depot vs Lowe's.

Home Depot is a little cheaper overall. But I find myself going to Lowe’s as well because each store does have some different products, especially when it comes to tools. But what I really dislike about Lowe’s is that they don’t let you buy trim and other long boards by the foot.

Menards is definitely the cheapest though and they have the largest selection of lumber. Their tools are the worst of the bunch though. I don’t like that so much of the lumber is outside though.

What's with the grate in the sink?

When it comes to appliances, between Amazon, HD, Lowes and Best Buy, I find Best Buy is the best. They'll negotiate prices and haggle just like buying a car, you'll need to get an assist manager involved and not just the salesman. I've gotten free tow-away of old appliances, free delivery, $100 store credit card and even matching Lowes veterans 10% discount.

I bought all new stainless LG kitchen appliances in 2017 and an LG top loading washer and dryer. For one thing, Lowes delivers from the store you made your purchase. So if that store is out of stock on what you wanted, you don't get it. Best Buy in my area delivers from a central warehouse in Orlando 60 miles away, almost everything on their website or in the store is available.

It's like a drainer, you can rise things and leave there to dry. Also since it's 33" wide, when you clean the table you can stack the stuff to the side until your ready to wash them. The sprayer is great, and it very deep, you can wash any pizza tray or whatever. Everyone should have one.

The local Home Depot and Lowe's are within half a mile of each other. However, the Home Depot was there first, and it's also closer (in an annoying high traffic area).

I have nothing against Lowe's, but Home Depot is always my first stop. I suppose that if I was coming from the other direction, I'd go to Lowe's first.

The 11% rebates at Menards are also a big plus. They just have some things that the other two absolutely can’t compete on price with where brands don’t matter much. For example, they have a much wider selection of granite bathroom vanity tops and a good 30% cheaper on them. Lighting there is also a much larger selection.

I have credit cards and have bought from both. I like Lowe's corporate stewardship better. HD is owned by a guy I don't agree with politically (let's say that instead). Lowe's does community outreach and gives back. So I haven't bought anything from HD in about two years.

And I boycott Menards. They treat their employees like shit and are a major polluter.

My favorite hardware store in KC is Strasser's True Value and they have just about everything for Hardware. I also like Ace Hardware because they are independently owned franchisees. More like a mom and pop.

Home Depot only because it is much more convenient for me. Menards is fairly close by as well.
