What's your opinion on bowl opt outs?

Bowl season used to be a good time to watch NFL prospects for the upcoming draft.

Now it seems like any player with NFL prospects doesn't even play, opting out to avoid the risk of an injury.

Do you agree with this practice? It's now commonplace and accepted.

One aspect that isn't publicized enough is an NFL prospect bailing on their teammates. Imagine going through the program for four, five years, being a senior and then your best player bails. You want to finish your college career with a win.

I know college football coaches are scumbags and these colleges make a killing off these players but it just doesn't seem right to me.

These players chose to play a team sport. They decide to be an individual when it's convenient for them. Why bail at the bowl game? Why don't they put four games of tape on film and bail then? If the NFL and their bank account is what matters, what's the purpose of playing the whole regular season and getting an injury?

**** me culture. Does a team even matter anymore?

A player skipping a bowl, may be enough to knock them down a round or so if I was a GM. ESPECIALLY if it was a QB or a captain of the college team. Integrity matters. Character matters.

If they’re looking at going pro, I don’t see any problem with it. The coaches are allowed to bail on their teams at the drop of a hat, so the players shouldn’t feel obligated to the university any more than the Bobby Petrinos of the world do.

Plus a guy getting drafted makes that college coach look more attractive for recruits. Nobody gives a shit if you won the bell helicopter bowl

It's fairly smart in my opinion. You're playing a high-stakes game over a month removed from game action, which is a large injury risk by itself. If a guy is risking millions, then opt-out. Do I understand the guys that are likely end of day 3 picks opting out? No, they could probably make more money if they performed well.

As a non-fan of meaningless college bowls, I didn't realize players were sitting out bowl games until I read this thread.

Good for them...

I can tell you this much. Not a chance in hell Mahomes would ever opt out of a bowl game. Could see Derek Carr or Kirk Cousins types who love nothing more then garbage yards who might do it differently

And how many coaches are only half way invested because they found another job? Or just don’t even coach in the game at all? I have no problems with players doing it.

NCAA could take out insurance policies for the top prospects...based on their projected draft positions/salary.

Jaylon Smith royally ****ed himself by playing in the Fiesta Bowl...

Not sure the NCAA would like a watered down Championship game. Check out the movie National Championship. It touches on it, but in the view as a protest in support of college athletes getting paid.

If the NCAA wants to pay players what they’re worth for these games I’m sure they can curb this problem.

I understand why they do it, for sure. It’s become a bigger problem after the playoffs we’re established. Not necessarily directly due to that, but players are less likely to opt out if they are in the playoffs. Hopefully the playoffs expand soon there there are more meaningful games that the elites don’t opt out of.
