Host Cities

Just got a question about host cities for the Super Bowl as I would have assumed they would share it around far more but looking at the recent list there is a huge bias towards both NFC stadiums and Southern States.

In most European sports like football there is a culture and tradition of neutral venues for big finals yet with some of the recent choices there were always going to be a strong chance of the home team making it and stacking the odds further in favour of one side.

I noted that Arrowhead has not hosted in at least 30 years. Is that due to the trend towards the big States or wanting to showcase the shiny new Stadiums like So-Fi this year and Raiders Vegas stadium in a couple of years time.

There does not seem to be much fairness in the allocation but you guys are much much longer term followers than me so all insights are welcomed.

I've always believed they are part of the approval process for a new stadium. I'm sure the city wants a SB to offset some costs.

KC would have had a SB if they built the rolling roof, IIRC that deal was done.

KC is also one of the top contenders for World Cup games at Arrowhead. If they can handle the WC they can handle the Super Bowl.

The issue has always been the dome.

A few years back, I remember reading how Charlotte was/is interested in hosting a Super Bowl, but Goodell said their main issue was they need at least 20k luxury hotel rooms available, and they were far below that. I assume KC is as well.

There are all sorts of stipulations for hosting. One of the funnier ones is the NFL requires at least two "premium quality bowling alleys."

Yet they didn't. In fact, they never got anywhere close to seriously considering it. It's almost like it's really tough to do.

Some guy on the internet speculating something based on something else completely unrelated doesn't mean it was ever even a consideration, much less going to happen.

Some of the conditions to be fulfilled by the host city/venue
  • The host stadium must be in a market that hosts an NFL team and must have a minimum of 70,000 seats, with the media and electrical amenities necessary to produce the Super Bowl. Stadiums may include temporary seating for Super Bowls, but seating must be approved by the league. Stadiums where the average game day temperature is below 50 °F (10 °C) must either have a roof or a waiver given by the league. There must be a minimum of 35,000 parking spaces within one mile of the stadium.
  • The host stadium must have space for the Gameday Experience, a large pregame entertainment area, within walking distance of the stadium.
  • The host city must have space for the NFL Experience, the interactive football theme park which is operated the week prior to the Super Bowl. An indoor venue for the event must have a minimum of 850,000 square feet (79,000 m2), and an outdoor venue must have a minimum of 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2). Additionally, there must be space nearby for the Media Center, and space for all other events involved in the Super Bowl week, including golf courses and bowling alleys.
  • The necessary infrastructure must be in place around the stadium and other Super Bowl facilities, including parking, security, electrical needs, media needs, communication needs, and transportation needs.
  • There must be a minimum number of hotel spaces within one hour's drive of the stadium equaling 35% of the stadium's capacity, along with hotels for the teams, officials, media, and other dignitaries. (For Super Bowl XXXIX, the city of Jacksonville docked several luxury cruise liners at their port to act as temporary hotel space).
  • There must be practice space of equal and comparable quality for both teams within a twenty minute drive of the team hotels, and rehearsal space for all events within a reasonable distance to the stadium. The practice facilities must have one grass field and at least one field of the same surface as the host stadium.
  • The stadium must have a minimum of 70,000 fixed seats, including club and fixed suite seating, during regular season operations.

Where are the future Super Bowls to be held?

After this season’s finale at the SoFi stadium in California, we’ll be off to the State Farm stadium for the Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona.

In 2024, the Allegiant stadium will play host whereas in 2025 the Super Bowl will be held at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

When the SB was in SF a few years ago, I was half hoping there would be a major pacific storm just to see what would happen.

SF had a home playoff game sometime back in the nineties during a major afternoon storm. For a home playoff game the stadium looked less than half full as fans stayed home.

I can't imagine how they could have done the half time show.

Edit: Of course, there were more storms 25+ years ago than there are now.

That's an awesome find. Pretty sure you can find two of those on Blue Ridge Blvd so Raytown should be all set.

They are spending a bunch of money to renovate before the SB. And partying on Bourbon street and the surrounding area is a lot of fun.

Since the game is being played in the Cardinals stadium does that mean that the Cards will make it to the SB?
