Playoff wins as the measure of a QB

One of the best all-encompassing measures of a QB's greatness might be playoff wins. If you look at this stat against most lists of the greatest QBs of all time, (at least those of the Super Bowl era) it lines up pretty closely.

Only 11 QBs in history have more playoff wins than Patrick Mahomes, who already has 11 at age 27.

The list with more than Mahomes:
Brady - 35
Montana - 16
Manning, Young, Elway, Bradshaw - 14
Roethlisberger, Favre, Staubach - 13
Rodgers - 12
  • Tom Brady has more than double what anyone else has, but at age 27 Brady only had 6 playoff wins.
  • Joe Montana's 10th was the 1988 Super Bowl win over Cincinatti, he was 31 years old that day.
  • Peyton Manning and John Elway both got their 10th at age 37. Brett Favre's 10th win came at age 32.

It already looks like a good bet that Mahomes will finish #2 all time in that measure. Everyone beyond 10 wins is a Hall of Famer or will be.

This is an amazing stat and shows how great Mahomes has been in his short time so far in the NFL. But at the same time, it doesn't show how much better those stats could have been had he had good defenses. /shrug

The stats are just incredible for conference championship games, after removing "playoff teams" like the Steelers and Texans.

2/3rds of the way to Brady in touchdowns in only 1/3rd of the games, yet only on pace for ~6 picks to his 17.

Nah, there is a reason that basically the only QB's in the AFC to go to the SB were Brady, Roethlisberger, and Manning for a long time.

Its a QB driven league, period, now more than ever.

Joe Flacco is 10-5 in the playoffs. All those road wins. Yet he's not sniffing the HOF.

Mahomes has a chip on his shoulder since he struggled in both Super Bowls, outside of the 4th quarter against the 49ers.

Then again, even Tom Brady has critics. You can't satisfy everyone. There is no undisputed GOAT in just about any sport.

You also have to keep in mind that they were probably a top 2 seed every year so they weren't getting a full slate of games.

Of course, Mahomes hasn't ever played in a championship game on the road, so that says even more about Mahomes.

Why is Joe Montana listed as AFC? Is it because the last one he played was with the Chiefs? And shouldn’t his be spilt 6/1? IDK..

It's an imperfect measure that may be more kind than it should be to some (Flacco) and harsher than it should be on others (Kelly). But, all measures are imperfect measures.

I just found it remarkable that even with all the caveats, and even acknowledging that it takes the effort of a whole franchise to win a playoff game not just a QB, when it's all said and done the list still sorts more or less in the order of all-time greatness for a QB.

OP updated.

There are now only 10 QBs all-time with more playoff wins than Patrick Mahomes, who is 27.
