Why is it on the ref, for calling an OBVIOUS penalty late in a game?

Where is the awareness of the actual player to know, "Hey, it's late game here. No bullshit. A penalty kills us here".

Instead of going out, pushing, shoving a guy well beyond the legal 5 yard barrier and crying when his foul gives the opponent the first down.

This is a coaching moment. The Eagles had one at the end of the Superbowl, the Jets had theirs last night, KC had ours with Dee Ford in 2018.

I don't remember too many fans upset with the refs for flagging Ford for lining up wrong. I blamed the player that committed the foul for the foul.

The idea that penalties shouldn't be called late in a tight game is ludicrous.

Raise your level of play late in games, and when your teammate gets a game changing INT, the opposition won't be handed a fresh set of downs because you shit yourself when the lights got bright.

The thought that the ref wouldn't have thrown the flag if the ball wasn't intercepted is ridiculous. Even if the ball isn't picked, it was still 3rd and 20 and now we have a very long FG to go up by 6, or leave the Jets with very good field position to tie the game.

If the ref was really set on helping the Chiefs, that flag gets thrown no matter what.

Exactly. Just don't grab the guy 25 yards downfield if you don't want to be flagged.

And the timing arguments always boggle my mind. The Chiefs are trying to win a game too. That's a critical play for them as well. Why should the defense get the luxury of it being late in the game so the refs are gonna "let em play"

on the dee ford thing I recall someone at the time saying a lot of times the refs will kind of let a player know they're offsides and give them a chance to correct it before throwing a flag. that poster got roasted for it in the gameday thread if i recall correctly

People are actually arguing that because the ref took ALL OF THREE SECONDS to grab the flag, it's suspicious and he clearly wanted to help the Chiefs win.

The ref could have taken 10 seconds and it would still be the correct call.

My feeling is the Jets should have been called for this stuff earlier in the game. Collinsworth confirmed that they were mugging Chiefs receivers and getting away with it. Same thing with the Eagles in the Super Bowl. The calls at the end were not wrong. Letting them get away with that stuff earlier in the game was wrong, and probably had a large impact on the score.

Ever since the Orlando Brown, Sr., eye injury from a thrown penalty flag, the game officials try their best to not throw flags while players are near.

Sherman says some wacky shit for a guy that is supposed to be smart.

Florio and Simms both commend the ref for throwing the flag - "courage" is the word they used. They agree it was PI on Sauce as well as agree the face mask was BEFORE the end zone. Not seeing a problem here other than the OP doesn't like Florio in which I too agree, I do not like Florio either.
