What do we do with Rashee Rice this time next year?

Assumptions:

-The Chiefs pay Trey, McDuffie and Karlaftis big contracts as Veach has noted

-Rice continues where he left off and has a great season that is 1,200 yards and 10 TD’s as a baseline. Also factoring in a small suspension just to be conservative with the projection.

-He’s clearly a top 10 WR like he was becoming last year. He’s now eligible to get paid and wants an extension of at least $30 million APY which would make him a top 5 WR. He thinks this bc his numbers reflect that of a top 5 WR.

-Worthy continues being awesome. Royals, while not Rashee, looks promising. Not a WR1, but a solid WR2 or WR3.

-Chiefs draft a WR prospect every year in the first 4 rds regardless of what they with Rice

What are you doing if you are Veach? The way I see it we have 4 options:

1. Trade him, either this time next year or after year 4 when you place the franchise tag on him. Value would likely be a mid 2nd rd pick value IMO. Maybe a 2nd + a day 3 pick.
2. Let him finish his 4 years and let him walk for a 3rd rd comp pick the following year
3. Let him finish his 4 year deal, franchise tag him for a year, then let him walk for a 3rd rd comp pick the following year
4. Pay him his contract and trade him after 2 years into the contract in 2028 for a day 3 pick (like we just did with Joe Thuney) and we save money on the cap.

What are you doing if you’re Brett Veach?

The last 2 years have shown that this idea that Mahomes will make chicken salad out of chicken shit is ridiculous. He still needs weapons. The thought that if Rice recovers from injury and turns into a top tier weapon that we would just let him walk or trade him because he's too expensive is a joke. Unfortunately we will soon no longer have the ultimate cheat code with a WR1 making TE money (Kelce), we will have to pay accordingly. They need to quit the revolving door at WR.

You're missing the point.

It's very difficult to find game changing pass rushers or Left Tackles picking where we do.

WR's often come from all over the draft; you have a shot at developing great WR's late in the first or second rounds (such as Worthy and Rice).

If you can draft one every year and they keep working out, then moving them for high draft capital makes good sense. So you can get those Left Tackles and stud Defensive Ends.

Yes you need weapons, but those can come from places other than top 20 picks.

Yes WRs come from all over, but until barely 2 years ago we hadn’t found shit at WR since Hill and before him not since Bowe. Now that we may have finally found a good to really good or great one we really are talking about moving on from him? You pay good players. You don’t see Philadelphia trading off their elite WRs and they still are paying for an elite LT and RT among other highly paid players. Just figure it out.

Maybe so.

But probably not top of the market.

Philly isn't planning on being competitive in 5 or 6 years. We are. That's the difference. Philly is selling their future for today.

Not tip top of the market, but the Eagles are paying Brown 33 and Jackson 25.

Who else are we paying on offense at that point?

Thuney is already gone
Kelce will be retired

Creed?

If Rice stays healthy and out of trouble, you try to get a 3 year Extention done with him after this season that built off franchise tag numbers.

I’d have to assume that Veach (as a forward thinker) will come to the table with Clark, Andy and Rashee next offseason and offer a 3 year EXTENTION worth right at 90m with 50 guaranteed and 20 as a signing bonus.

That would put him under contract in KC through 2029 and he would become a FA at 29 years old and we will have gotten his prime years.

Dude was looking RARE last year before Pat blew out his knee trying to be Superman.

Interesting parallel here. I would assume the Packers drafted Golden to replace Watson (who is a broke dick) and Williams as Jayden Reed insurance.

I’d just keep drafting these guys every single year regardless

If we've figured out how to draft and develop WR's, I'd just keep doing so and trade 'em for draft capital.

Great ones are just so insanely expensive at this point.

And I'm not convinced that the difference between a good one and a great one is worth the cost.

I'd look forward to the "Mahomes doesn't trust these new WR's, they don't run the routes correct" threads. They write themselves.

I think last year the injury bug just decimated what they wanted to do. The trust was there with Rashee and Juju and it seemed fine for Hollywood. Worthy was forced to immediately be “the guy” from week 4 and that just threw a wrench in everything, but did help speed up the process for him later in the season. Hollywood and Worthy out 90% of the season, Juju out for a month. We just got decimated.

Feels like this year Royals can afford to learn with 4 guys Mahomes trusts in front of him.

If the plan is to continuously cycle WR's, you're gonna have to have your QB trust young inexperienced guys at some point.

Agreed. You said it better. I wouldn’t sign any player to big contract if I didn’t trust their character. And Rice has a lot of question marks. I’d rather trade him and reload.
