Matt Cassel: Good or Bad?

We may as well have an easy point of reference for people to be able to come back and eat their crow when this all pans out. Everyone always says I knew it all along. Step up and put it down.

I don't think a 2nd round pick is terrible, but I don't think Matt Cassel will pan out in KC. I'll put it down right here, right now. And now I'll start praying I'm wrong.

Forget the trade. The only thing I want you to commit too is whether or not Cassel is a good or bad choice for QBOTF.

Yep. Gotta' get rid of that ball. That's one of the things about the QB position that I rarely hear anyone say anything about.

If you're drafting high in the first round, and you've got two or three worthy candidates, which guy has the least "bone head factor".

Who consistently makes the right call in terms of:

The play is shot, gotta' dump it to the sidelines.
I've got a lane, it's time to run.
Everybody is covered like a blanket; I shouldn't try to force the completion.

A great arm is all well and good, but there's a HELL of a lot more to this position than that.

One of Petro's callers said that he took 28 sacks in the first half but only 19 in the second. So that's at least a positive sign.

And that's why I preferred Sanchez slightly over Stafford.

That being said, I think Cassel might offer some of those same things...no reason NOT to hope at this point, my friend.

and everything i've seen so far(including the jets game on nflnet yesterday) the ends were roaring in on him all the time. sometimes they were there when his back foot hit. he seems to have prettyy good pocket awareness. funny play when in the jets game the 2 DEs ran straight into each other when he stepped up

I don't see why Pioli wouldn't work out a deal with Cassel. He and Haley want him here.

So, as a Pats fan, I made the mistake of searching for threads with "Cassel" in the title. I got back 25 pages, LOL. So I just picked this one to chime in to.

I think you guys got a pretty good deal. Most Pats fans figured Cassel would go for a mid- to low-1st. Instead, for a high 2nd, you got Cassel plus Vrabel.

Up until last year, most Pats fans thought Cassel was pretty much a wasted roster spot. He never did much in training camp or preseason and pretty much was assumed to be a breathing clipboard holder and that, if Brady ever went down, we were screwed. However, a minority of Belichick acolytes always pointed out that Darth Hoodie must see SOMETHING in Cassel, or else why keep him around? His lack of quality college playing time also didn't make anyone in New England whack off frantically with joy with the idea of him as the backup. (Nothing like your claim to fame being announcers pointing out how many Heisman Trophy winners you've backed up...)

Once Brady went down, most people feared the season lost. And Cassel did look the deer in the headlights for the first few games... not making decisions quick enough, and not seeing the open guy, and frequently telegraphing his intent. But then something funny started to happen: his play got better and better, the Cassel-haters started wondering if they'd made a mistake, and he turned into a pretty efficient quarterback. He started looking off the safeties, making his read progressions, and hitting open guys and moving the chains. The best compliment that could be given would be that many started referring to his efficiency as "Brady-like".

Is he likely going to Canton? Probably not. But, IMO, he's a better option than the retreads and old geezers wandering around the league, and a better risk than an expensive college kid who might be the next Drew Bledsoe or Peyton Manning but also might be the next Rick Mirer or Ryan Leaf. And I think Cassel's probably better than quite a lot of the starting QBs in the league; not sure I'd take anyone over him aside from the obvious winners like Brady, Manning (Original Version), maybe Roethlsomething and a few others. I'm not even sure I'd take a supposedly-decent QB like Romo or Cutler over Cassel. Having Pioli in place is also key since he knows what Cassel needs around him to be successful.

I suppose you can make worse QB choices than a guy who's backed up Brady, been tutored by Belichick, and already has had some success in the league. Most former Pats don't seem to do so well with their new teams, but hopefully Cassel breaks that trend. (I have nothing against the Chiefs, and with Pioli and Cassel and Vrabel I'm actually rooting for them. On the other had, I despise the Chargers, Raiders, and Broncos with the fiery heat of a thousand suns or, alternately, of a habanero pepper up the poopchute).

Attitude counts for a lot. Don't get me wrong, the best can-do attitude won't help a QB who sucks; but, a QB--even a talented one--with head problems isn't a great thing. Cutler and Romo might have more God-given talent than a guy like Cassel, but the NFL is littered with the corpses of "physical specimens" who had sh*t for brains (see "George, Jeff", as well as Michael Vick). Cassel seems pretty sure of his abilities and has a good even keel to him, sort of like Brady.

If, at the end of last season, it had been pronounced that Brady would need another year off, and the Pats decided to re-sign Cassel and go with him again as the starter, I think most of Patriots Nation would've been fine with that. Which says a lot about Cassel, considering how many of us wanted him gone at the end of the preseason...

Just give the kid a chance, and don't organize the lynch mob if he starts off with a bad game.
