Do you have a good reason to bump that thread?

Lately, we've had a few users who think bumping threads from years ago is fun for them. It's nothing new necessarily but the mod team has had more and more complaints on the matter. At least 2 people have been banned over it. So we wanted to make an announcement. If you are browsing the archives and decide to bump an old thread to the front page you should have a very compelling reason and state it in your bump post. Otherwise, you may risk a vacation. This rule applies in the lounge area at this time only. It doesn't seem to be a problem in subforums.

Out of curiosity, why is it such a bad thing for someone to 'bump' an older thread? I've seen threads similar to this one on every board I visit, but never understood why exactly this is such a terrible thing to do.

There's been instances where people have gone on bumping rampages mostly just to be obnoxious, and I'm guessing this was in response to one of them.

A few people were obnoxious about it back then, either bumping threads with just 'bump' for no apparent reason or would bump a bunch of threads at the same time in a mental breakdown/begging-to-be-banned sort of way.

In general, it's not a big deal though.

Yep, a couple of people were going through some kind of attention whoring breakdown.

So, bumping threads doesn't in any way damage the board, say from a technical perspective? We find it distasteful because it clutters the board, and possibly people are then forced to read thread titles unnecessarily? Seriously just asking, because for me this is one of those great unknowns of the internet universe.

Nah, it doesn't hurt the database in any way if that's what you're asking.

To me, there are three types of bumps:
  1. Bumping a thread on a related topic to post additional information. In general, I dislike these because I wish people would just post a new thread, but many seem hesitant to start threads these days.
  2. Bumping an old thread because it's interesting to look back at opinions from years ago. These are usually in good fun and are interesting for the most part.
  3. Bumping dozens of threads all at once to flood the front page with outdated bullshit. These are completely obnoxious and will likely get you banned.

I can't really say what the situation was at the time this thread was created. Phobia certainly had strong opinions about some things. I'm guessing it was some combination of #2 and #3.
