"How To Train Your Dragon" is really cute. I thought it equal to or slightly below "Kung Fu Panda", but "Dragon" seems to be getting better reviews. It's got a ridiculous 97% "Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, with a review ratio of 89 to 3.

Watched Fantastic Mr. Fox tonight. One of my kids got hopped up on the M&Ms in the popcorn and wouldn't shut the **** up or calm down throughout the movie (okay, he's only 2.5 years old), so I didn't get to watch it as closely as I would have liked. I really enjoyed it, though, when I wasn't having a kid bouncing up and down in my lap and shoving firetrucks in my face.

It's one of those films with a simple moral on the surface, but the more you think about it the deeper it gets. The obvious one is the old chestnut about self-worth and inner qualities, etc.,. ("Mulan", "Kung Fu Panda", a bunch more.) And it's also an eco-fable ("be nicer to animals" kind of thing). But it also has resonance in how countries/ethnicities relate ("our enemy is not what we think they are" kind of stuff) and it even has a handicapped angle.
The crowds were sparse today but, what people there were, applauded at the end of each film. I think the positive reviews it's getting will help build business for it but, like "Kung Fu Panda", I think it'll do less business than it deserves, simply because it doesn't say "Disney" or "Pixar" at the front of it. Which is a shame. Don't get me wrong, I love Disney, but there's been some very solid non-Disney stuff that gets overlooked (e.g. "The Iron Giant"). |

I haven't seen it in a while but I remember it being a pretty entertaining B action flick. Though, I remember something about it not quite feeling right. Too contrived, tried too hard to be cool or something like that.

Watched "Up in the Air". It's a very good movie that is a good commentary of our current economic times.
