Meh. I would imagine that the Japanese have placed a pretty high priority on getting both additional batteries and replacement diesel generators in place to ensure continued pump operation. We are probably helping, too.

No. It's really pretty simple. Even the the core has been SCRAMed, there is still residual heat being generated, quite a lot of it. If the pumps failed because of lack of power, then they couldn't get any new coolant near the core to remove the heat. So, as long as they can get the pumps back working and water flowing to the core, there won't be a serious problem.

Can a powerplant be effectively restarted after the core has been SCRAMed? Is that a huge undertaking?
