Second, there would have been no need to physically restrain her. You calmly explain to her that you don't want to see her get hurt or hurt anyone else by driving drunk. Like most of your arguments I've seen on this site, it only works in a perfect world.

I'm not sure if you've spent time around different kinds of drunk people but "calmly explaining" reason with someone that's plastered doesn't always work.

.. And calling the cops on your girlfriend? Saddling her with a night in jail, $10,000+ in legal fees, and stripping her license away? No one would do that. NO ONE.

I had a barbecue where my best friend (known him since I was born) got really drunk to where he could barely walk. He wanted to drive home and I told him there was no way I was letting him drive. He argued with me and I was able to get his keys from him and told him to go sleep it off in of our spare bedrooms. He went to the room and I went back to the BBQ. 30 minutes later we heard his truck start and I ran to the front of the house. He had a extra set of keys he kept hidden under the front bumper in one if those magnetic key holders. I got to the front yard just in time to see him drive off. I called the cops on him and when they found him his car was in a ditch 10 miles from my house. So don't tell me that no one would do that.

I'm not really sure what to say here.

The first part of your story really just highlights my point. Drunk people are extremely hard to reason with. She likely wouldn't have gotten into a car with him at that point and, as a man, a domestic violence occurrence would be extremely likely if he were to attempt to wrest her keys from her/prevent her from getting in her car.

So really his only option was to call the police or just let her go. You may have called the cops on your friend, but I'd bet you're in a vast minority in that situation...

However, I will agree that he likely could have handled everything up until that point in a better way. Canceling a drunk person's drink order is a recipe for disaster
