I've always been a Night Owl, so I'll catch at least half the episodes of any given season Live and I'll watch the best skits that I missed and musical acts on Hulu.
The skits and musical guests have always been hit or miss. They've had some seriously awesome actors and skits over the years, from the original group to the Eddie Murphy era in the 80's to maybe the greatest era, IMO of course, with Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler and the untouchable and absolutely amazing Phil Hartman, to the Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, Jimmy Fallon nutty years to Amy Poehler, Tina Fay, Seth Meyers, Fred Armison, Andy Samberb, Bill Hader years. Unfortunately, for the past two years, the show has really fallen off the mark. While they'll occasionally hit on a great skit or musical act (I am STILL blown away by Halsey's performance a few years ago - mindblowing), I think it might be time to move on from Colin Jost, Michael Che and the other writers because it's just been really stale. And I like Colin Jost and Michael Che's news segment for the most part but they're the co-head writers and therefore, are ultimately responsible for the show's overall performance. As for Pete Davidson, I used to think he was weird, then I thought he was funny but now, he just seems like a turd. He's was funnier when he was all wiry and skinny but he's gained some serious weight and the black circles under his eyes are so deep and heavy that it's distracting. I tried to watch his movie a few months back and just couldn't take it. Sandler and Samberg were relatable dorks on the show but I just don't get Pete. |

I believe the phrase is, you either get it or you don't. No amount of explanation will suffice.

I didn't even say shit about SNL, good or bad. But you don't have a lot of synapses to fire, so there's bound to be redundancy and false associations blipping around that little rattlecan of yours.

Can we please not get this thread exiled to DC? It's already starting to draw some of them like a moth to a flame.

I don't see enough of it to know for sure that SNL currently sucks, but I assume it does since 90% of what I've seen over the last 10 years has sucked. The Trump stuff was decent, but he's such an easy target.
One thing I have noticed even in my limited viewing is what seems like a weird over-reliance on alumni and outsiders to do characters. Once in a while is "fun," but they're doing stuff the regular cast would normally be doing. They usually do recurring celeb impersonations or political figures, but is the cast roster really so thin that they have to keep bringing back old timers? There was NO ONE to do Biden so they had to bring on Jim Carrey, who was never even associated with the show? And when was Maya Rudolph ever funny even once? They've been bringing her back for stuff for years. So Elon Musk is host? So edgy! I'm sure it'll be hilarious. The dumb thing about that choice is that most people probably don't even know who he is. And many who have probably heard the name/associate it with Tesla but really don't "KNOW" him or his personality. Makes no sense, but they've survived 50 years, I'm sure they know what they're doing.
