They still have Kansas a #2 even after getting whooped by Baylor and Tech. If KU gets a 2, I will shit myself and not change my drawers for weeks. No freaking way.

Do you know how you can get 7 teams to lose in the first round? Invite 7 Big 10 teams to the tournament. What a joke.

I don't see anyway possible that the Big East doesn't get three #1 seeds this year. That has got to be some sort of record.

So hey, Basketball Prospectus has some valuable efficiency rankings that may help you figure out who's going to prevail in certain matchups.

Quote:
It's the Efficiency
Memphis is My Favorite

by John Gasaway

The NCAA selection committee likes to say they look at a team's "body of work." I do, too, it's just that for me the body of work is usually the conference season, the time of year when "home" and "road" are balanced and the schedule is not crafted by coaches but instead is dictated to them.

That's why Memphis poses a special challenge to any evaluation that leans on a team's in-conference results. The Tigers are an elite team in a middling conference. They dominate their league to an extent that no other team in the nation can match. What can be done in terms of measuring this team against the likes of Louisville, Pitt, North Carolina and Connecticut?

Let's start at the beginning. For any team, every possession in conference play is a test: score, then keep the other team from scoring. If we took all of the major-conference teams that received NCAA bids last night and tracked how well they did on each such "test" during league play, what would we find?
CLICK THE LINK, SHIT'S INTERESTING

So MU has a better chance at winning than KU eventhough both are 3 seeds?

Well if a team full of upper classman cant go deeper in the tourney than a team of mostly fresh and sophs.

Then yes, I can see where there is a problem...

I dunno man, Kenpom is insanely accurate. If you ever look at the money line, it is almost exactly what kenpom says it is. And when it's off, Kenpom usually was right. With that said, I used to be sold on Gonzaga but they are a bunch of wasted talent. I bet Gonzaga isn't much better than Arizona.

West Region Breakdown: Memphis will win, watch for Washington

Underrated: Washington

I realize the Huskies are a four seed, but for a team that won the Pac-10 regular season outright and has been ranked in the top 15 the last few weeks, they are generating little buzz. Washington looked a little ragged at the start of the season because it was working in a freshman point guard, but Isaiah Thomas really blossomed during league play. His improvement has allowed Justin Dentmon to play off the ball, where he's more comfortable. Plus, the Huskies have one of the nation's best defensive rebounders in Jon Brockman.

Overrated: Missouri

The Tigers did a terrific job winning the Big 12 tournament, but keep in mind they didn't have to play either Kansas or Oklahoma en route to the title. Missouri relies heavily on its defensive pressure, but in the tournament they will be playing teams that are generally steady at the point. (That's why they're in the tournament.) If Mizzou has to score in its halfcourt offense, it can lose to anybody.

Bracket Buster: Utah State

Even though I'm picking the Aggies to lose in the first round to Marquette, they're the only double-digit seed in this region that I think has a chance to make it to the second weekend. I believe Mississippi State played over its head in the SEC tournament, and teams that make that kind of surprising run to an at-large bid usually peter out the following week.

Home cooking: Washington

Washington playing in Portland is pretty nice, as is Utah State playing in Boise. This is the result of there being so few good teams out west this year. By the time the committee bracketed those teams, they had plenty of western slots still available.

Best player you've never heard of: Gary Wilkinson, 6-9 senior forward, Utah State

Wilkinson has a pretty amazing story. He dropped out of high school and, after converting to Mormonism, went on a two-year mission, took up basketball, played in junior college, transferred to Utah State and now, at 26, is the best player on the WAC champs. He's a big, strong kid who has excellent shooting range as well as a great feel for the game. He'll be a tough matchup for whoever is guarding him.

Best matchup: UConn versus Memphis

Aside from the three games that will be played in Detroit, this is the game everyone wants to see. Usually, the committee sends the top two seed to the closest regional to home, but in this case the committee went with competitive balance. Oh, and don't believe John Calipari if he says he's disappointed with being a two seed. The "snub" will allow him to convince his players that the world is doubting them, so it's time to prove everyone wrong.

The pick: Memphis

I was very firm in my advocacy for UConn as a No. 1 seed based on their body of work, but I have a nagging feeling that somewhere along the line, the Huskies will severely miss guard Jerome Dyson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury. Memphis is a fabulous defensive team, so I think they would be able to shut down A.J. Price. Memphis is less of a known quantity than it was last year, when the Tigers returned all their starters from a team that had reached the Elite Eight and then added Derrick Rose. But their length, their athleticism and the confidence they've gained from winning 25 straight should catapult them to the Final Four.

The loss of Dyson is why I think UDub has a shot at knocking off UConn. UKnow?

Gotta love the Dakota schools, nice addition to Valley football. Hopefully you bastards upgrade some more to get into the real MVC as well.

It won't be long before SDSU and NDSU are ruling the MVC in football, imo. Their lineage is too strong to suggest otherwise.

What Memphis has done this year is amazing. But I hesitate to give them TOO much credit due to the (lack of) competition in their conference. Yeah, hate to do that. I know people said that about them last year, as well. They are really good, no doubt. And I guess it would not surprise me to see them back in the FF this year. Just saying that I think it is hard judge them based on their records and stats due to lesser competition.

It is difficult to judge Memphis based on their conference, but it's easy to see they have great talent. Evans, Anderson, Dozier, Taggert, and they go 12 deep. They can score inside or outside and play great defense. I kind of expect them to roll through the West and on to the Final Four.

I have no idea how they are not a 1 seed. None. I know the Big East beats the piss out of each other, but it has shown weakness in their respective games. I don't think those guys are as good as everyone thinks they are. Calipari has Memphis playing some damn good ball. I'm certainly no fan of theirs, but they got hosed as a 2 seed.
