Great Snow Dump 2011

Calling for anywhere from 5-10 inches of the crap in NE Kansas starting today at noon.

Good luck to all your backs after shoveling it.

This really surprised me when they did it. As you said they usually wait till morning of to decide. What makes it even more strange was that tomorrow was an early release day. So Jr High kids would be home at 1:15 and the Sr. High and Elementary would be home by 2:00 pm. So I am flummoxed by the whole thing especially if it turns out not as bad or comes in late.

Is it typical for kids to get snow days now?

The only day I remember getting an off day was when Mt. St. Helens erupted and covered Montana with ash. Then, like idiots, we went out and played in the ash.

How can you guys possibly remember what years (and how much snow you got) these things happened? Seriously, I don't know if I could tell you what days we've had snow the past month and how much we've had. I might be able to tell you what days schools were closed if I looked at a calender, but I'm doubtful of even that.

Yeah, I noticed that also. Obviously, whoever wrote that wasn't in the same 15 mph wind as me today.

The worst winters I remember were 1992-93 and 1993-94. Freshman and Sophomore years in college. I was in Virginia at the time, and as I recall 92-93 was snow (I think over 3' total for the whole winter, including a blizzard that dropped around 2') and 93-94 was a series of ice storms.

I haven't seen anything like this winter since I left the east. Two significant snowfalls and a major snowstorm on the way. Cold this winter, too, at least it seems like it, although there's still been the random 50 degree days that make me remember I'm in Kansas.

I remember when I was 12 we had an ice storm that knocked out power for about 5 days. My first year in grad school we had a storm there that dumped almost 18 inches. But for this area (CoMo), 20+ inches of snow is damned near unheard of.
I know Chicago hasn't been hit like this since '99. That was a pain in the ass. I actually lived in the city then and had to park on the street. The snow eventually was higher than the top of my ****ing car. I didn't move it from that spot for nearly a week.

Easy

It was NYE
It was the first time I was old enough to particpate in my church's youth lock-in
I had an aunt that died during that storm
