Restaurants of yesteryear

What Restaurants did you grow up around? I'm not talking super fancy and yes fast-food counts. What distinctive memories do you associate with them?

Mine?

Taco Via-(the lit up menu of the various taco plates displayed on the wall), WhiteCastle-On a paper plate with fries and Pepsi, Arthur Treachers(off Noland), Tippins(off Noland), Perkins(the free toy well), Country Deli(awesome local deli to Blue Springs heated sandwiches on Sourdough buns), Zarda BBQ and Dairy, FunHouse Pizza(of Course)(Dark. Video- Games,Electonic Riding Bull and 25-cent Taco night) Annes Sante Fe.

Keep in mind I never see these anymore living in Georgia.

Even with all the development, it's still pretty hard to miss. It's right at the Eastern start of Airport Road, right where 40 enters the valley proper from the east, on the south side of the highway.

they (maid-rite) appear to be a chain though. I see they have them in D.C. as well.

Remember when Roseanne Barr bought a 'loose meat' restaurant, both one in real life and one on her sitcom? That was based on Maid-Rite.

They had one in Kirksville for like the first month I went to NEMSU/Truman, then it closed.

Had a couple before that one closed, had a couple more on a road trip to Iowa, then later went to Roseanne's operation.

Not bad, but I'd rather have a sloppy joe.

There's a Maid Rite still open in Lexington, MO, just down the street from Wentworth Military Academy. Lexington is about 35 miles east of KC on he Missouri River.

Never been to any of these places. My Grandmother used to make her version of the nu-way. She'd scramble and brown 50/50 chopped onion vs. ground chuck. until very, very well done. Next she'd steam wonder bread and simply put pickle and mustard on them. Man, they were good.

For me it was A&W when my dad was still alive, then later on Shoney's. I actually still have one of those little A&W glass mugs that are a little bigger than a shot glass from when I was 3 years old.

I grew up on Hi-Boy burgers. Now for some reason their beef doesn't agree with me, and I cracked a tooth on one of their onion rings several years ago, so quit eating there. I do stop in very rarely for a chocolate shake. They do have excellent shakes and ice cream treats.

BTW: There are two classic family run drive ins in Independence that were recently reviewed in the Pitch.

Clem's in Western Independence on 23rd St, between Sterling and Maywood, and Mug's Up in Central Independence, on 23rd St. between Noland and Lee's Summit, Rd. Clem's serves old style "crumble loose meat" hamburgers, and Mugs Up still makes their own home made root beer and makes "Zipburgers" and "Whizzburgers." Both are friendly small businesses. Glad to see them both up and running, Clem's just re-opened this year after being shut down for a few years.

both greasy dive that are great.
