To me the hard handles are a must, I got a newer set with the more rubberized handles (kitchen aid brand) and the handles got tore up badly pretty quick...

went back to my good old henckels...

I'm thinking about getting a bigger set soon, I love them...

I really don't want to get into a Cutco war here; they are good knives. Maybe even very good knives. But they're overpriced. The problem, IMHO, is the people that buy them spend so much on them they're getting a personal, vested interest in them, so they lose the ability to be objective about them.

The ATK list is a pretty good list. This is what you're looking for, if anyone is interested:

This is the "best buy" list:
  • Victorinox Fibrox Paring Knife: $4.95
  • Victorinox Fibrox 8-inch Chef's Knife: $29.95
  • Victorinox 10-1/4-inch Fibrox Serrated (Wavy/Curvy) Bread Knife: $49.95
  • Victorinox Fibrox 12-Inch Granton Edge Slicing Knife: $49.95
  • Victorinox Fibrox 6-inch Straight Boning Knife: Flexible: $19.95
  • J. A. Henckels International Kitchen Shears—Take Apart: $14.95
  • Bodum Bistro Universal Knife Block: $44.95

Obviously, ATK is partial to their Victorinox. I've got the chef's knife, the bread knife, and the boning knife, and I can see why. They all feel great and hold and edge very well. They make very good knives for not a lot of money. I've got the slicing knife, too, but hardly ever use it. It was kind of a wasted purchase. As I said earlier, I reach for that chef's knife more often than my $100 Tojiro gyuto or the $150 hand-made Watanabe blade santoku.

This is their "highly recommended" list of the best performing knives:
  • Wüsthof Classic 3 1/2-inch Paring Knife: $39.95
  • Victorinox Fibrox 8-inch Chef's Knife: $29.95
  • Wüsthof Classic 10-inch Bread Knife: $109.95
  • Victorinox Fibrox Granton Edge 12-inch Slicing/Carving Knife: $49.95
  • Victorinox Fibrox 6-inch Straight Boning Knife: Flexible: $19.95
  • Kershaw 1120M TaskMaster Kitchen Shears: $49.95
  • Bodum Bistro Universal Knife Block: $44.95

You'll notice still the Victorinox beat out quite a bit and still made it on their "highly recommended" DIY set.

I would urge you to reconsider buying a set. You'll be better off buying only the knives you need; those sets always come with knives that don't sell because no one uses them.

You have to be careful with both Henckels and Wusthof brands because they carry a pro-line and a non-pro line. I didn't see that those were pro quality. The pro line is going to cost you more. I had a Wusthof non pro paring knife as a gift one Christmas and the handle broke about 6 months later. The pro line naturally is going to cost you more but you get what you pay for.

Maybe he does, but so do a dozen (or more) other people that never get banned or put on miserable user. That's my point. Either enforce universally, or don't enforce.

Agreed. I believe the mods usually give warnings before unleashing their footlongs though. Ignored it and someone packed him in good.

I've got a PM into the mods about this, but not getting a favorable response. I didn't really expect one.

Is it possible to allow him access to certain threads, while restricting access to others?

Well I tolerate him more than most on this site and his input in this thread is good, he's had this shit coming for his actions in other threads. He needs this timeout in the corner to get his shit straight.

My only real beef is the complete lack of consistency to the application of bans and miserable user status. As it is, it's a popularity contest, and god forbid you piss of more than one mod.
