I'll second the mental theory. Presuming the disparity is statistically for real (we have very few AB's where he is not leading off), then the only explanation is that his head is screwed up. He gets this idea of how he should behave at the plate leading off vs not, and he's more effective when he tries to get on base than when he's trying to hit it out.

My guess is that with the sporadic championships, and the regular late season blowups, they probably view you more like Broncos fans.

Yes. But, imo, not as bad. KU fans come across to non-KU fans as similar but they don't viscerally disgust me with their behavior to the degree that Cards fans do (though this might only be because I'm a rare MU fan that doesn't hate KU and, in fact, likes to see them succeed (though not against MU)).
