Why can't we hire EB as a head coaching apprentice?

Like, why can't head coaches train to be head coaches?

He could literally shadow Reid for a couple of years, and he could learn all the aspects of being a head coach that he wouldn't learn as a coordinator, and maybe the things that trip up first time head coaches wouldn't get a Head Coach Apprentice.

This could make the transition from Reid to the next HC as seamless as possible. Because I do get the feeling that players might actually advocate for EB if Reid made a surprise retirement after winning on Sunday.

I don't think Reid would say anything negative, but he absolutely was under no obligation to support EB that way. He is an NFL coach, so Reid is very versed in not really saying anything while saying a lot of words. He could have said all sorts of things other than he would make a good head coach.

Reid supports his guys. He always has. He did the same with Bob Sutton even when it was clear that it wasn't working.

I really don't understand all the handwringing and insinuation that race is the most likely culprit why he hasn't gotten a headcoaching job. There have been plenty of roles he's interviewed for that have gone to other black candidates. The most likely explanation why he hasn't gotten one of these jobs is just that he has a style that's different from others and that owners don't think will translate to leading an entire organization. And all the while there are questions about just how good of an OC that he is given that he was under Reid in KC and didn't exactly light the world on fire in Washington.

And that's all fine. No one is entitled to a headcoaching job. There are only 32 of them in the world.

I 100% believe if Dan Quinn was black, he never would have been hired as a HC a second time.

It isn't necessarily about black candidates being passed over, as several new hires are black, but it is more about white coaches who fail miserably still getting a second chance before black candidates even get a single chance.

Sure, I can believe that. But none of that means EB deserves a head coaching role just because the Jets were stupid enough to hire Gase (Quinn was clearly just right place right time with the Commanders and had at least coached a successful team in the past).

Makes a ton of sense. Being an assistant head coach would give a coach far more of a grounding in leading the entire on field organisation than being in charge of 1 side of the ball can do.
