Dude smacked 38 in his last full season. Had his hip stayed healthy he would have ended his career w/500 easy. I'm partial to the guy. I knew the guy growing up. Lived 6 houses down from him and played ball with him and his brother. I'd love to see the guy make the hall but if he does... it's gonna be way down the line. |

The thread raises a great question, I think.
Delgado was a damn fine player but certainly not an elite player of his era, which is an important criteria for HOF consideration. But if the best players of his era were juiced up and he wasn't (?) then shouls his numbers be compared to those players? Bonds, McGwire, Palmeiro, Sosa, etc.. All contemporaries that we might compare Delgado to. Yeah, interesting question. |

The player who is actually his closest statistical counterpoint is Willie Stargell.
Pops was dominant in his era, though, and deserved to be in the HOF. Delgado had too many contemporaries with equivalent numbers (Giambi, Bagwell, Caseco, McGriff). Sorry. No ticket for him... |

Delgado never really got the respect he deserved from the US media (much like Halladay until his move to Philly), but as a Jays fan who calls Delgado one of my all-time favorites, I'd still say no for the HOF. I'd love to see it, but I'm a small hall guy. He was a great hitter, but there were too many better hitters in the league during his prime (especially at the 1B position).
He still should have won the 2003 AL MVP over ARod, though. The only reason he didn't was because he played in Toronto. |

Damon is going to be a really interesting case. If he plays two more years he will get 3,000 hits, and everyone outside of Pete Rose that has hit 3,000 is in the Hall.
However, Damon was never considered a great player during his era. Even during his run with NY and Boston where he had a ton of media publicity, he only made the All Star game twice. He has never finished higher than 13th in the MVP voting. He's never really been considered a great fielder either. If he gets in just because of reaching the mythical 3,000 hit club it will water down the Hall a bit. |

And further, if Damon gets elected to the Hall, it is very likely he will go in wearing a Royals hat (the player doesn't get to pick, and he played most of his years with the Royals).
Would the Royals retire his number? |

I thought it was based on where the player made the biggest impact, not where he played the most games.

In Damon's case, he played 4 years with Boston with 1 WS, and 4 years with the Yankees with 1 WS. How do you pick between those two? My guess is that the Hall splits the difference and just goes with KC (6 seasons). Damon said that was his guess too in an interview earlier this season. |

From that era, if I were going on "guy I'd most want on my team" at first base, it would have been Will Clark. THAT, was a gamer.
