Everything in the endzone would have been covered forcing Pat to throw it away or throw underneath and risk coming up short with no way to stop the clock.
This isn't a dis on Pat, but he has a tendency with not throwing the ball away due to his competitiveness. He will get that under control as his career progresses. While I would have preferred to go for the TD,I definitely understand why Andy didn't.

I think it's just tougher for the Pats to defend. Rubs, etc. all can open up a bit more from closer on and the ball gets there quicker making it tougher to defend. Pretty much just makes taking an extra shot less risky, at least from my standpoint.

I get that, but it’s also enough time for something awful to happen and you get nothing. Kick the FG, go to OT, and pray you win the toss.....or that Brady decides during that last possession that he is no longer interested in Super Bowling anymore.......

Well, the debate is becoming more clear as more excellent posts accrue. At 10 yards, you could potentially spread the defense out and run crossers all over the place to try and get something open at the goal line. The defense would have less time to react. Okay. Got it.
But, if I'm Wally (and I have no TOs and 16 seconds on the clock), I tell Mahomes to hit the TD if he sees it wide-damn-open. If it isn't there, throw it away. Period. Don't take a sack, don't put the ball at risk, and don't throw it to somebody who could potentially get tackled inbounds. That's what I do. And I wouldn't lose a moment of sleep over the decision. This is classic Monday morning quarterbacking. For Mahomes at that point, the priority is getting the game to overtime when you’re at that stage with no time outs left. If you can take a shot at the end zone and win, you do it. But you don’t let a mistake beat you. So let’s say he hits Williams. Two possibilities: 1/ Williams ****s up and stays in bounds, gets tackled, game over. Or 2/ Williams gets out of bounds and then you’re still at the 10 and need to be throwing into what’s likely double or triple coverage in the end zone again, risking a pick and the end of the game.
Had Mahomes thrown a pick to end the game there, Reid would’ve been castigated and Mahomes probably would’ve been mentally crushed through the entire offseason. We have the single most aggressive QB in the NFL who has 3rd and short and chucks it 40yds downfield. There’s no part of me that will ever question his or Reid’s aggressiveness in a situation like this. |

50/50 shot you win the coin toss, much higher chance something goes wrong with no timeouts trying to gain some extra yard.

As much as I love pat, in that situation he’s going to try to make a play. It’s his nature.
But you don’t really want that there. In the future I’d be more willing to give that a shot. Right now, you don’t put him in that situation |

Like WTF? Not trust him, why do you ever throw to him then? Mental clock.... tick tick tick, your mental clock isn't working. In Reality, he just missed seeing Williams open along the side line just like he missed him with an open throw..... it's football, these things happen, Pat is human too !! Just like the Dee Ford penalty! Just like not scoring any points the 1st half! It's football and these little things are the things as a team they need to grow and improve on. Experience is the best teacher!

I do wish they'd have taken one more endzone shot.
I also wish the offense had actually started playing before the third quarter. And that the defense hadn't stopped playing in the fourth quarter. Oh well. |

Easier to defend a 30 yard pass and harder to defend a quick hitting slant or out from the 10.

I wish Dee Ford would have lined up 6" farther back. One single solitary play kind of wish. Just 6" of wish.
